<p>Early in her career, before her move to politics, the late Alexa McDonough was a social worker in Nova Scotia. Another Nova Scotian social worker, Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard, is joining us to share lessons learned from her road to political engagement as we wind down our annual recognition of National Social Work Month.</p><p>This event is organized in partnership with SENgage to inspire social workers and social work students to become more engaged in political advocacy and leadership.</p><p>Social work was essential before the pandemic, crucial during the pandemic, and now more than ever, social workers are <strong>#InCriticalDemand</strong>. Thank you for joining us to celebrate our profession.</p>
For members of the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers, participating in this session may be counted as informal professional development. It may also be used to fulfil the mandatory annual requirement for training or activities related to social justice engagement.
<em>Stay to the end for the door prize draw!</em><h2>Speaker bio:</h2><h3>The Honourable Wanda Thomas Bernard, PhD, C.M., O.N.S.</h3><p><strong>Senator – Nova Scotia (East Preston)</strong></p><p>Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard is the first African Nova Scotian woman to be appointed to the Senate of Canada, representing the province of Nova Scotia and her hometown of East Preston. Senator Thomas Bernard champions issues impacting African Canadians and people living with disabilities. She is particularly invested in human rights, employment equity, and mental health. Through her involvement in community projects, her social work career, her time with Dalhousie School of Social Work, and now her work in the Senate, Senator Thomas Bernard has maintained a deep dedication to social justice and racial justice.
