Together, we can make a positive impact on our environment and create a more sustainable future.The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas Inc.is a not – for – profit incorporation registered with theInformation Services Canada (ISC) Saskatchewan, under entity number 102084283.TheFriends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Area's goalsare to increase the safety and preservation of the afforestation areas as outlinedhere.As incorporated entities with an unique identity, Friends are governed by board members; and have customized organizational by-laws and letters patent.  Friends work locally with the City of Saskatoon park superintendent, MVA guidance, and other park liaisons as designated by the park superintendent. In Ontario, there are many, many Friends of the Park organizations, working together collaboratively to achieve mutually beneficial objectives.

Assembling together to take part in scientific methods to monitor and report environmental or science issues

This City Nature Challenge talk happening at 6:00 pm will be followed directly after at 7:00 with a talk on Citizen Science Event Planning. You will be very welcome to attend either or both register for this event, and sign in at whichever time 6 or 7.What is a City Nature Challenge?The City Nature Challenge is an annual fun and friendly competition between cities internationally racing against time to record local wildlife. It has taken place in a four day window between Friday to a Monday every April or May since 2016. Can you believe it has expanded from 2 cities to over 400. The City Nature Challenge is wonderful, as anyone can take part, and the challenge tries to meet three main goals: 1) how many people participated, 2) how many observations were made and 3) how many different species were recorded. Generally speaking, cities held BioBlitzes and other community events as part of City Nature Challenge. COVID-19 didn&#x27;t stop the City Nature Challenge, as people can get together in their own COVID Bubble, or just wander to their front yard, or to the corner park with their phone and observe birds, insects and so on. So, it can be a group event, or just whenever you are outside with iNaturalist loaded on your phone. Would you like to enter your city for City Nature Challenge in 2023, plan a City Nature Challenge event, or simply learn more about the background of the City Nature Challenge? Then this talk is for you. It will cover: The history of the City Nature Challenge How City Nature Challenge is flexible and can adapt to the pandemic if needed Some examples of events led by cities around the world, some spectacular stories A common tool used by participants to collect wildlife data: the iNaturalist appThis City Nature Challenge talk will be followed directly after at 7 with a talk on Citizen Science Event Planning. In general, citizen science means that members of the public who aren’t currently working as scientists get involved in scientific research. This may be something very simple like using their smartphone to measure sky brightness, or it may be very involved such as getting a group of people together and learning scientific methods to monitor and report pollution. For the City Nature Challenge, Citizen Science is the collection and cataloging of wild observations of living organisms in a database located on iNaturalist. There are many public Citizen Science projects on an enormous range of topics. *********Help put the City of Saskatoon and area on the world nature scene! Using iNaturalist take photos of plants, animals, insects and mushrooms between April 29 - May 2, 2022! Saskatoon will compete for the title of the most Biodiverse City. We need your help. The goals are to engage the public in the collection of biodiversity data, with three awards each year for the cities and areas that makes the most observations, find the most species, and engage the most people.CNC YXE DNU participant / collaborator / organiser meetings held the second Tuesday of the month via zoom email for your zoom link friendsafforestation@gmail.com From there we can arrange to host iNaturalist introductory webinars for observers and identifiers or bio-blitz hints and tips.From May 3-May 8 identify what was found in Saskatoon Taking part is easy!Answering questions about the CNC, about iNaturalist, Social Media promotion, ... Meetings are via zoom as a way to answer questions which may come up should you wish to participate!
