Open Dialogue Live: Data and its Impact on Health

Join Dalhousie experts to talk about the importance of health-related data and how it impacts us collectively and individually.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted individuals and society in many ways; as we transition out of the pandemic, we need to think about how we view and process health data and what we can learn for future public health events. Heath data collection and restoration (especially data on diagnosis, race/ethnicity, age, geolocation, gender) are critical not only to analyze and understand the impact of COVID-19 across our community and the globe but also to respond to the public appropriately and inform our health care system. In this session, you will hear from Dalhousie experts who are exploring the topic of health data in relation to privacy and access concerns and how it impacts public and individual health. Our presenters:<ul><li> Carla Heggie (BA’77) is a certified Information Access &amp; Privacy Professional, and has been involved with the development, writing, delivery and teaching of information management legislation and policy for over 34 years, while administering the NS FOIPOP Act, PIIDPA, and PHIA for both the Province of Nova Scotia and Dalhousie University. She is an adjunct professor and instructor at Dalhousie in the faculties of Computer Science and Management.</li><li> Dr. Finlay Maguire is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Computer Science and Department of Community Health &amp; Epidemiology at Dalhousie University. He is also the Pathogenomics Bioinformatics Lead for Toronto’s Shared Hospital Laboratory. His research involves using genomic data to better understand infectious diseases and the collaborative application of data science methods to social and health-related problems. </li><li> Dr. Samuel Stewart (PhD’14) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Health &amp; Epidemiology at Dalhousie University. He is also the Director of HDNS, the provincial repository for de-identified health administrative data for the purposes of research.  His research areas of interest include secondary data analysis, natural language processing, machine learning, decision support systems, and meta-analysis.</li></ul>The discussion will be hosted by Dr. Tara Sampalli (MASC&#x27;01, PhD&#x27;11), Senior Scientific Director in the Research, Innovation and Discovery portfolio at Nova Scotia Health. Tara obtained her PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies specializing in Health Informatics from Dalhousie University. Tara is the lead for the Implementation Science Team and embedded scientific activities including being lead contact for Health System Impact Fellows in Research, Innovation &amp; Discovery. Working with key partners in Nova Scotia Health and the province, she is also involved in leading the development of a learning health system strategy. Tara and the implementation team routinely engage in supporting key policy, planning and practice improvement decisions through rapid reviews, implementation science initiatives and rapid evaluation.
