Reimagining People-Plant Relations

Canada's oldest university botanic garden, UBC Botanical Garden was established in 1916 under the directorship of John Davidson, British Columbia's first provincial botanist. The original mission of the Garden was research into the native flora of British Columbia.Over the pastcentury, the mission of UBC Botanical Garden has broadened to include research, conservation, teaching and public display of temperate plants from around the world, particularly Asian, alpine and native plants.

When: Thursday May 12, 2022. 7:00 pm - 8:15 pmWhere: Online ZoomWho: Erin Despard, Artist in Residence - UBC Botanical GardenDescription: How can art and design help to reimagine our ways of living with plants in a time of widespread environmental crisis? Join us for a conversation between Artist in Residence Erin Despard, and student architects Saige Michel and Jingzhou Sun. Presenting excerpts from recent plant-focused projects, each will discuss what they have learned in the process of incorporating plants in their respective practices. While plants are living beings with their own agendas, when they become part of a building, landscape or creative practice, they must be embedded in human social relations. Working with them in these settings provides a unique opportunity to re-imagine the relations between people and plants, in ways that could be socially as well as environmentally beneficial. Along with the presenters, participants will be invited to reflect on possibilities for translating between creative and design processes and more practical forms of plant-focused inquiry, such as gardening, foraging, ecological restoration and so on.About the speakers:Erin Despard is a writer, researcher and gardener. She has been Artist in Residence at UBC Botanical Garden since the fall of 2020 and is also a Research Associate and Instructor in UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.Jingzhou Sun is a third year, dual degree Masters student in Landscape Architecture and Architecture at UBC. He is interested in incorporating living materials in designs and challenging the ways we build and live now.Saige Michel is a student in the Masters of Architecture program at UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.
