Curator Tour:  Yinka Shonibare’s Mr. and Mrs. Andrews without their Heads

Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG) is an independent non-profit public art gallery committed to the acquisition, presentation, interpretation and dissemination of contemporary art for the benefit of the local arts community. Its programs explore a variety of issues and include exhibitions, talks, lectures, tours and publications. OAG has a growing permanent collection of historical and contemporary works associated with the region. It also houses the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art, which consists of more than 1,600 works of art assembled by Ottawa collectors O.J. and Isobel Firestone, who acquired the works from the early 1950s to the 1970s.__________

Join senior curator Rachelle Dickenson for an in-person tour of Yinka Shonibare’s installation Mr. and Mrs. Andrews without their Heads

Currently installed on the OAG’s fourth floor, this work by Shonibare reimagines Thomas Gainsborough’s famous 18th-century portrait of Mr. Andrews, Mrs. Andrews, and their land, in a critique of our reliance on ideas of authenticity, and – by exposing the mechanisms of meaning-making in art history – reminds viewers that nothing is what it seems. Please note this program will take place in English.

Rachelle Dickenson is of British, Irish and through her paternal Grandfather, Red River Métis descent. Having learned about her Métis ancestry as an adult, she is guided by decolonial and Indigenous methodologies and the arts and academic communities of which she is part. She has a PhD from the School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies at Carleton University and has taught courses in curatorial studies, Indigenous and white settler art histories and critical museology. Rachelle was co-curator of the ambitious global exhibition Àbadakone | Continuous Fire | Feu Continuel at the National Gallery of Canada, along with Greg Hill (Senior Audain Curator) and Christine Lalonde (Associate Curator). As a curator, maker, and scholar, her practice engages with relationships and distinctions between white settler and Indigenous art histories, pedagogies and curatorial practices in Canadian art exhibition and educational institutions, in support of relevant, respectful, responsible and reciprocal BIPOC and white settler arts collaborations.

Rachelle Dickenson, commissaire, sous-chef, offre une visite sur place, à la GAO, de l’installation M. et Mme Andrews sans leur tête de Yinka Shonibare (1998).Présentée au 4e niveau de la GAO, l’ œuvre M. et Mme Andrews sans leur tête de Yinka Shonibare transforme le célèbre portrait des Andrews sur leurs terres, réalisé par Thomas Gainsborough au XVIIIe siècle, en critique de notre dépendance aux concepts d’authenticité, et – en exposant les mécanismes de fabrication du sens en histoire de l’art – nous rappelle que les apparences sont trompeuses. Cette activité se déroulera en anglais.

Rachelle Dickenson est de descendance britannique, irlandaise et, du côté de son grand-père paternel, métisse de Red River, héritage qu’elle découvre une fois adulte. Elle se laisse depuis guider par des méthodologies autochtones et décoloniales, ainsi que par les communautés artistiques et universitaires desquelles elle fait partie. Titulaire d’un doctorat de la School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies de l’Université Carleton, elle travaille de près avec la communauté universitaire et a enseigné la conservation, les histoires de l’art autochtone et celle des peuples colonisateurs blancs ainsi que la muséologie. Rachelle a coorganisé Àbadakone | Continuous Fire | Feu Continuel, l’ambitieuse exposition à caractère international du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada avec Greg Hill (conservateur principal Audain) et Christine Lalonde (conservatrice associée). Commissaire, universitaire et consultante, ayant aussi une pratique créative, elle s’intéresse à ce qui lie ou différencie les histoires de l’art des peuples colonisateurs blancs et des peuples autochtones et se penche sur les pratiques en commissariat et pédagogies employées dans les établissements d’exposition et d’enseignement, et favorise les collaborations artistiques pertinentes, responsables, respectueuses et réciproques entre membres des communautés PANDC et des peuples colonisateurs blancs.
