In Ontario, there are many, many Friends of the Park organizations, working together collaboratively to achieve mutually beneficial objectives.

Mushrooms A Guide for iNaturalist Observation and Idenfication via photography

In general, identification to genus can often be accomplished in the field using a local mushroom guide. Identification to species, however, requires more effort. A mushroom develops from a button stage into a mature structure, and only the latter can provide certain characteristics needed for the identification of the species. However, over-mature specimens lose features and cease producing spores. Many novices have mistaken humid water marks on paper for white spore prints, or discolored paper from oozing liquids on lamella edges for colored spored prints. The presence of juices upon breaking, bruising reactions, odors, tastes, shades of color, habitat, habit, and season are all considered by both amateur and professional mycologists. Tasting and smelling mushrooms carries its own hazards because of poisons and allergens. Chemical tests are also used for some genera.Many species of mushrooms seemingly appear overnight, growing or expanding rapidly. This phenomenon is the source of several common expressions in the English language including &quot;to mushroom&quot; or &quot;mushrooming&quot; (expanding rapidly in size or scope) and &quot;to pop up like a mushroom&quot; (to appear unexpectedly and quickly). In reality, all species of mushrooms take several days to form primordial mushroom fruit bodies, though they do expand rapidly by the absorption of fluids.The identification of a few local species are included in this workshop which includes which parts of the mushroom to include in your iNaturalist photography. INaturalist is a free smart phone app to connect with experts in the various fields of nature for identifications. A quantity of images can be submitted to iNaturalist comprising different angles of an organism, and a new feature for birders is that sound recordings can also be uploaded to iNaturalist now as well.Join the BioDiverCity Challenge occuring June 5 - June 9 taking place in both Saskatoon and Area as well as for the Province of Saskatchewan. It will be interesting to compare the results from the City Nature Challenge and the BioDiverCity Challenge. Many naturalists were saying that the four days of June would see higher biodiversity thatn the City Nature Challenge at the end of April. Take action on Global Conservation Efforts and Celebrate Canada&#x27;s Environment Week, and the 50th anniversary of World Enviroment Day June 5 #OnlyOneEarth.
