ISF2022: Modern Biology

Established in 2011, the Indian Summer Festival (ISF) is a multi-disciplinary arts festival produced by the Indian Summer Arts Society, a not-for-profit charitable arts organization based in Vancouver, Canada, on the unceded Coast Salish territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. This year’s festival runs from July 4-14 2024. Its mission is to offer multi-art experiences of exceptional caliber, thoughtfully curated through a South Asian lens. ISF connects rich and complex pasts with the emerging future, delighting audiences while provoking necessary dialogue and debate.

A surprising and beautiful musical experience that brings us closer to nature and each other.“…his videos of mushrooms making calming ambient soundscapes, have already racked up more than half a million Tik Tok followers and 25 million views.” - The Guardian, UKMUSIC SERIES PARTNER: Creative BCModern Biology is the new project of veteran musician <a href="https://indiansummerfest.ca/artists/tarun-nayar/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Tarun Nayar</a>. Formally trained in Indian Classical music and educated as a biologist, Modern Biology sees him turn a new leaf by bringing his passions together in an ambient project that is organismic, uplifting, and deeply contextual. He uses modular synthesis, home-built synthesizers and other analog equipment to improvise with the natural vibrations of a certain place and time - via plant bioelectricity, latent electromagnetic radiation, and even the earth’s resonant hum. With his work going viral with millions of views internationally, Tarun is sought after all over the world, with upcoming shows in Toronto and Stockholm. But this live show at ISF is a special one, for us and for him. We are his community, and we’ve always rooted for him (to keep the botanical references going). He’ll also be joined by a special guest - sitar virtuoso <a href="https://indiansummerfest.ca/artists/sharanjeet-singh-mand/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Sharanjeet Singh Mand</a> who is just back from playing his sitar at Everest Base Camp!We’ve found the perfect spot to listen to this transcendental music - outdoors, in a natural amphitheatre facing the sea on Granville Island. What’s more, we’ll set you up with high-quality wireless headphones so that you can remain fully immersed in the ambient world Tarun creates, even if you choose to take a short walk down to the edge of the water. This is part meditation, part concert. FAQsWhich type of ticket should I purchase?All ISF2022 events offer subsidized tickets for individuals facing financial barriers in accessing arts programming (subject to availability).Ask yourself:<ul><li>Are you and your family homeowners or landowners?</li><li>Have you attended private education, or have an advanced degree?</li><li>Can you easily access and afford healthcare services?</li><li>Do you have no debt and/or have disposable income?</li></ul>If your answers were all ‘Yes’ please consider the Pay It Forward Admission price point. This allows us to offer our subsidized tickets to audience members in need.Your answers were mostly ‘Yes’ or evenly split - we suggest the General Admission price point.If your answers were majority or all ‘No’, we suggest the Subsidized Admission price point (subject to availability and offered across all of our ticketed events).(thanks to Meenakshi Das of Data is for Everyone for the sliding scale framework)Are there service fees on top of the ticket price?For your convenience, our listed ticket prices include GST and service fees. Do I need a ticket to attend this event if I make a donation?Yes! Donations alone do not grant admission, however, donations of $25+ qualify for membership and a charitable tax receipt which will be issued in January following the calendar year in which your donation was made.Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?There are no age restrictions for this event. Attendees of any age require a ticket. Is there reserved seating?Seating is first-come-first-served. If you require accessible seating, you will be asked for these details during the checkout process. An ISF staff member will contact you shortly. Will there be tickets available at the door? While there may be some tickets available at the door, we recommend buying in advance as many events do sell out. Tickets will be sold at the door while supplies last, available for purchase by debit or credit card.
