ISF2022: Song of the Breath

Established in 2011, the Indian Summer Festival (ISF) is a multi-disciplinary arts festival produced by the Indian Summer Arts Society, a not-for-profit charitable arts organization based in Vancouver, Canada, on the unceded Coast Salish territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. This year’s festival runs from July 4-14 2024. Its mission is to offer multi-art experiences of exceptional caliber, thoughtfully curated through a South Asian lens. ISF connects rich and complex pasts with the emerging future, delighting audiences while provoking necessary dialogue and debate.

A celebration of mindfulness and inner and outer healing.“Maitreyi has deep knowledge of artistic practices as well as traditional healing practices and philosophies.” - Dr. Arun Garg, MD FRCPSSUPPORTED BY: Vancouver Foundation<a href="https://indiansummerfest.ca/artists/yogacharini-maitreyi/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Yogacharini Maitreyi</a> is both a trained artist and a master yoga practitioner with a dedicated following in Vancouver and around the world. In this special event, she invites us to a space in which art, modern science and ancient wisdom meet. The evening is opened by revered Sḵwx̱wú7mesh elder and sculptor Robert Yelton whose iconic totem rises high in Stanley Park. We then watch the screening of a short film by Maitreyi titled ‘Karma: Song of the Breath’, which introduces us to Karma, a remarkable woman who undertook an inner and outer healing journey after an accident left her paralyzed from the waist down. Karma addressed her own healing by being of service to others and has gone on to become a certified holistic Arkaya Yoga teacher. After the film, we meet Karma, and her two healers - rehabilitation specialist Dr. Rajiv Reebye and Yogacharini Maitreyi, who speak about the complex art of healing. But no talk of healing should be in the abstract. After a short intermission, the second half of the evening will immerse you in a 45-minute musical, meditative mindful movement journey of pranayama, breath and soul song (kirtan) to heal the inner child in you. Expect your senses to be elevated. No special clothing or training is required to participate in the movement and song. This unique project creates the space and resources for artists to come up with remedies against despair and potions for joy. FAQsWhich type of ticket should I purchase?All ISF2022 events offer subsidized tickets for individuals facing financial barriers in accessing arts programming (subject to availability).Ask yourself:<ul><li>Are you and your family homeowners or landowners?</li><li>Have you attended private education, or have an advanced degree?</li><li>Can you easily access and afford healthcare services?</li><li>Do you have no debt and/or have disposable income?</li></ul>If your answers were all ‘Yes’ please consider the Pay It Forward Admission price point. Attendees of any age require a ticket. Is there reserved seating?Seating is first-come-first-served. If you require accessible seating, you will be asked for these details during the checkout process. An ISF staff member will contact you shortly. Will there be tickets available at the door? While there may be some tickets available at the door, we recommend buying in advance as many events do sell out.
