Tours of the Biogas Plant

ZooShare Biogas Co-operative

We're excited to welcome both members/non-members for tours around ZooShare's Biogas plant!

Biogas plant

What is biogas?Biogas is the gas created from the breakdown of organic waste. The gas is formed when bacteria eat organic waste and release methane, carbon dioxide and other gases. Instead of letting these greenhouse gases escape into the atmosphere, we capture the gas and store it until it can be used to create energy. Biogas is a renewable energy source. Why is this tour unique?ZooShare's biogas plant is Canada's 1st zoo-based biogas plant--there's none like it! Come with us as we explore how both zoo and food waste can be converted into usable energy to power our homes and buildings! What can you expect to learn from this tour?In this tour, we will first cover the history of ZooShare. We will discuss how ZooShare came into existence and how the project was born! After a brief history lesson, we will begin to dive into the magic of the biogas plant. There are 5 main areas of the biogas plant---the receiving zones, the heat exchange/pump room, anaerobic digester, the digestate end storage tank, and the CHP engines. We will walk you through each area and provide the basics as to how the zoo/food waste travels through each system! By the end of the tour, you should have a basic understanding as to how the zoo/food waste travels through each mechanism and is converted into energy! Directions:When on Meadowvale road, you'll see an exit lane to the zoo. Use the right lane to take the exit toward Zoo road. Then, you'll have an option to either go straight or turn to the right. Turn right onto Zoo road and follow the dirt path. You should see a ZooShare sign on your left. As you follow the dirt path there'll be a big area on your left where you can park. Straight ahead, you should see a big green lid and gates where a representative from ZooShare will be waiting to greet you!Parking:There is ample parking in front of the biogas plant (towards the left of the gates). Waiver:All attendees must complete a waiver prior to attending the tour. Click this link to sign the waiver. What to wear/bring:

Outdoor attire

Sturdy comfortable shoes (as we will be walking on uneven ground)

Hat/Sunglasses

Water bottle

Anything else you feel is necessary as we'll be outside for the tour!

Check out our website for more information on ZooShare. Please reach out to Benedict at benedict@zooshare.ca if you have any questions!
