Nova Scotian social workers are invited to explore the root causes of workplace burnout, and discuss how to address them.

Members of the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers are required to complete annual professional development, which must include training related to social work ethics.

Vicarious trauma & secondary stress

Members of the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers are required to complete annual professional development, which must include training or activities related to preventing and managing vicarious trauma and secondary stress.

<p>While vicarious trauma and secondary distress are real concerns for social workers, often burnout and compassion fatigue are the result of other factors such as policy or management practices. </p><p>Understanding the causes is crucial to begin to understand how to fix the problem. </p><p>This session will outline the ethical considerations related to an accurate assessment of the root causes of burnout, and will provide attendees with opportunities to discuss diverse methods of addressing these.</p><h2>Presenter</h2><p><strong>N Siritsky</strong> joined NSCSW as our professional practice and advocacy consultant in 2021. N came to the College with significant experience in a wide variety of settings including hospice and palliative care, community mental health, academia and health care administration, as well as a background in research, policy and advocacy. With doctoral research focused on compassion fatigue and burnout, N is passionate about advancing the field of social work and its values, and eager to meet with our members and support them in their important work.</p><h2>Eligibility</h2><p>Must be a current member of the <a href="https://nscsw.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Nova Scotia College of Social Workers</a> to attend; all active, associate, retired, and student members are welcome. There is no other prerequisite for this session. </p><p>You&#x27;ll need a device that can use <a href="https://zoom.us/test" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Zoom</a>, and a reasonably reliable internet connection.</p><h2>Category</h2><p>Participating in this event may fulfil part of the newly mandated professional development requirements for all NSCSW members.
