“ Collaboration Tools for the Percussionist in Improvised Music”

Les Sympathiques is a nonprofit (RLRQ, C. C-38) collective of Montréal musicians, other artists, and supporters who believe that the best way to develop our practice is through performance and sharing with the wider community. Central to this goal is presenting music that we deem rich in artistic quality (i.e. music with depth in its technical, semiotic, and innovative aspects). Our members and participating artists hail primarily from the jazz, classical, and experimental scenes. Our goal is to be a catalyst and binding agent for our musical community; one which stimulates creativity through providing:-a space and framework for quotidian performance,-a forum for discussing topical philosophical, theoretical, and practical issues,-and a conduit for sharing the fruits of this process with each other, and also with the public at large.We believe that challenging and sophisticated artwork need not remain only in the realm of the concert hall, nor should valued public exhibition be conserved for the occasion of grand festivals. It is our position that a creative state of mind is often easier to attain in a casual and comfortable atmosphere, just as excellence is only achieved through process and continuous effort. Moreover, the quest for creative excellence gains a greater dimensionality and significance when it is undertaken collectively.

The Access Artists Mentorship Program is a creative workshop program for musicians elevating womxn, non-binary, and persons of historically underrepresented and marginalized communities. The goal of AAMP is to find balance, diversity, and a stronger sense of community through the facilitation of accessible, high-quality resources.Mentor:Mili Hong | Multi-Faceted DrummerThere are a lot of parallels between Improvised music and improvised conversation. Effective techniques for leading conversations include the utilization of space between sentences, body language, listening to others, breathing, and speaking at moderate speeds and volumes. On the other hand, methods such as interrupting, mimicking, or yelling at each other are not encouraged unless the speaker wants to raise considerable tension within the conversation. When improvising with others, people who may have never met before have the opportunity to expose their emotions through music and sound and make themselves vulnerable. This is the beautiful thing about improvised music! In this workshop, everyone will learn to use the methods mentioned above to express their feelings/thoughts through percussion playing.`Mentee: Ruiqi Wang __Le Programme de Mentorat Accès aux Artistes est un programme d’ateliers créatifs pour musicien.nes mettant en avant les personnes femmes, non-binaires ou de communautés historiquement sous-représentées et marginalisées. L’objectif du PMAA est de trouver un équilibre, une diversité et un sentiment approfondi de communauté à travers la médiation de ressources accessibles et de grande qualité.Mentor:Mili Hong | Batteuse polyvalenteIl existe de nombreux parallèles entre la musique improvisée et la conversation improvisée. Les techniques efficaces pour mener des conversations comprennent l’utilisation de l’espace entre les phrases, le langage corporel, l’écoute des autres, la respiration et la parole à des vitesses et volumes modérés. D’un autre côté, les méthodes telles que s’interrompre, se mimer ou se crier dessus ne sont pas encouragées à moins que l’orateur ne veuille augmenter considérablement la tension dans la conversation. Lorsqu’elles improvisent avec d’autres, des personnes qui ne se sont peut-être jamais rencontrées auparavant ont la possibilité d’exposer leurs émotions à travers la musique et le son et de se rendre vulnérables. C’est ce qu’il y a de beau dans la musique improvisée ! Dans cet atelier, chacun apprendra à utiliser les méthodes mentionnées ci-dessus pour exprimer ses sentiments/pensées à travers le jeu de percussion.mentoré.es. : Ruiqi Wang
