“Healing-Centered / Trauma Informed Therapeutic Songwriting”

Les Sympathiques is a nonprofit (RLRQ, C. C-38) collective of Montréal musicians, other artists, and supporters who believe that the best way to develop our practice is through performance and sharing with the wider community. Central to this goal is presenting music that we deem rich in artistic quality (i.e. music with depth in its technical, semiotic, and innovative aspects). Our members and participating artists hail primarily from the jazz, classical, and experimental scenes. Our goal is to be a catalyst and binding agent for our musical community; one which stimulates creativity through providing:-a space and framework for quotidian performance,-a forum for discussing topical philosophical, theoretical, and practical issues,-and a conduit for sharing the fruits of this process with each other, and also with the public at large.We believe that challenging and sophisticated artwork need not remain only in the realm of the concert hall, nor should valued public exhibition be conserved for the occasion of grand festivals. It is our position that a creative state of mind is often easier to attain in a casual and comfortable atmosphere, just as excellence is only achieved through process and continuous effort. Moreover, the quest for creative excellence gains a greater dimensionality and significance when it is undertaken collectively.

The Access Artists Mentorship Program is a creative workshop program for musicians elevating womxn, non-binary, and persons of historically underrepresented and marginalized communities. The goal of AAMP is to find balance, diversity, and a stronger sense of community through the facilitation of accessible, high-quality resources.Mentor:Thanya Iyer | Songwriter / composer How can we align our creation process in songwriting and improvisation with healing-centered approaches that nurture individual and communal agency, support self-expression and provide ongoing opportunities for people we work with to exercise choice and mutual collaboration? In this workshop, we’re going to write a song! We’ll talk about different songwriting and improvisational methods of creation, including lyric writing, melody formation and chordal harmony techniques. Together, we’ll also brainstorm how we can align these specific creative practices closely to healing-centered ways of being.Mentee: Méshama Eyob-Austin __Le Programme de Mentorat Accès aux Artistes est un programme d’ateliers créatifs pour musicien.nes mettant en avant les personnes femmes, non-binaires ou de communautés historiquement sous-représentées et marginalisées. L’objectif du PMAA est de trouver un équilibre, une diversité et un sentiment approfondi de communauté à travers la médiation de ressources accessibles et de grande qualité.Atelier: “Autour de la Guérison / Composition Therapeutique Informée par les Traumas »Mentor:Thanya Iyer | Auteur-compositriceComment pouvons-nous aligner notre processus de création dans l’écriture de chansons et l’improvisation avec des approches centrées sur la guérison qui nourrissent l’action individuelle et communautaire, soutiennent l’expression de soi et offrent aux personnes avec lesquelles nous travaillons des opportunités continues d’exercer leur choix et leur collaboration mutuelle ? Dans cet atelier, nous allons écrire une chanson ! Nous parlerons de différentes méthodes d’écriture de chansons et d’improvisation de création, y compris l’écriture lyrique, la formation de mélodies et les techniques d’harmonie d’accords.
