Vancouver Island Field Day: Cover Cropping

The BC Climate Agri-Solutions Fund (CAF) provides funding to help farmers tackle climate change by adopting beneficial managing practices (BMPs) in three specific areas: Nitrogen Management, Cover Cropping and Rotational Grazing. CAF is funded by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through the On-Farm Climate Action Fund and delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC.

Lentelus Farms

Cover cropping is a method of planting that helps build healthy soil and can be practiced in any farming operation. Cover cropping keeps the ground covered and helps with continued carbon sequestration in non-production areas. They significantly reduce emissions from nitrogen fertilizers by providing healthy nutrients to the soil. When carefully chosen and managed properly, cover crops can benefit production for farmers and help mitigate climate change.We invite farmers to join us and hear from our three guest speakers, tour Lentelus Farms, see a variety of cover crops and learn about their cover cropping program. This will be an opportunity to hear from industry specialists, fellow farmers, and the owner/operator of our host farm. The day will include a tour of the 20 acres of diverse cover cropped area, demonstrations with their cover cropping equipment, and significant time for questions and conversation. About Lentelus Farms<a href="http://lentelusfarms.com/the-farm-stand" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Lentelus Farms</a> is a mixed livestock, crop and forage operation on Vancouver Island and Kelowna. They were established in 2015 and provide products across BC. With 200 acres of land, they create riparian buffers and grassland set-asides, cover crop on all of their fields every winter, produce most of the feed for the animals on the farm, and manage an on-farm breeding program. They grow grains and forage for their livestock and use covercrops to soak up extra nutrients, provide shoulder season grazing, ground cover, and nitrogen fixing capacity. Leasing land from Ducks Unlimited, they work with the organization to maintain wildlife habitat. Cover crops benefit their soil and provide visiting birds a food source, especially in the off season. Their cover cropping program uses covercrops as part of a winter wildfowl habitat program on the lands leased from Ducks Unlimited Canada. With a majority of their fields planted as permanent grass stands now, they have 20 acres of crop land in cover crops which are on their vegetable and grain rotations using cover crop seed grown on the farm. This fall, they are planting rye and tillage radish to naturally break up compaction and reduce their tillage program going into spring 2023. Guest Speakers Dave SemmelinkDave has a degree in sustainable forestry and conservation from The University of British Columbia and years of farming experience in Bo-Kouga, South Africa. Utilizing a balance between theoretical scientific knowledge, practical skills and work ethic, Dave has a strong passion for creating sustainable solutions for the agricultural industry.Angela BossAngela is the Coast Team Lead in the Regional Development Unit of Vancouver Island for BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food. She is a professional agrologist with extensive experience in food security and agriculture program design, extension methods, behavior change and program implementation and reporting. Thom O&#x27;Dell Thom is the North Island regional agrologist; he is new to the role and excited to help bring extension services to farmers in the area.
