<h2>Jay Yoo&#x27;s TRIO OF GROOVE</h2>Best known as the guitarist for award-winning Browntasauras Records electric-jazz group SNAGGLE, this 27 year old guitarist brings his TRIO OF GROOVE to Guelph&#x27;s Royal City Studios performing funkified modern jazz for the Guelph Jazz Fest&#x27;s &quot;About Town&quot; Club Series. Jay has been on the rise in the bustling Toronto jazz scene since his graduation from the University of Toronto&#x27;s jazz program, where he studied under Geoff Young, Mike Murley &amp; David Occhipinti. Born in South Korea, he continues to embrace his roots as a members of the Korean fusion band &quot;Haneum&quot;, but is active in multiple projects exploring genres ranging from jazz, funk, rock and R&#x27;n&#x27;B and has been a long time collaborator for vocalist Jenna Marie Pinard, as well as pianist Mark Kazakevich. We were on the brink of closure after a long struggle to stay open during the pandemic, but thanks to <a href="https://www.guelphmercury.com/news-story/10682751--i-started-this-for-the-community-guelph-s-royal-city-studios-facing-closure/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">THIS </a>front page story in the Guelph Mercury, our plight as a dying service built to serve this region&#x27;s musical community was made public and -- thankfully -- a few gracious investors came out of the woodwork. The result was an influx of life saving funds, a restructuring, and -- most importantly -- we&#x27;re still here, as a recording studio, rehearsal space and concert venue! So when the Guelph Jazz Festival approached me to ask if our freshly reborn venue would be interested in being one of the destinations in their &quot;Jazz Around Town&quot; Club Series (Sept 15-18), I of course immediately wanted that opportunity. BUT, it was already late in the game and this wasn&#x27;t something I could think about earlier, when my space&#x27;s survival was hanging in the balance. But now that we were through that gauntlet (for now anyway), where was I going to find 4 fantastic top-shelf groups on such short notice to create 4 nights of awesome shows? Well -- in high school, a million years ago, I played tenor saxophone and was grateful to have, back then, been among those playing in all of the ensembles and (gratefully) winning awards. And at my side there was ALWAYS a Trinidadian born trumpet player, who was one of my closest friends. We played in everything together, from concert band, to the big band, to jazz ensembles, to even a small combo that he ran. He would move to New York City and today, a million years later, he&#x27;s now called &quot;Canada&#x27;s pre-eminent jazz trumpet player&quot; by the New York Village Voice, after training in NYC with the legendary Randy Brecker. He has gone on to play with the likes of Jay-z, Guru, Mos Def, Missy Elliot, Paul Simon &amp; Quincy Jones and has won more awards than I can name including being a 2x National Jazz Award winning, a 6x Global Music Award winner, and appeared on the cover of NOW magazine after being called &quot;Toronto&#x27;s top jazz musician&quot;.... all this when he&#x27;s not running his own jazz record label in Brooklyn, New York: BROWNTASAURAS RECORDS. Yes, my old highschool friend is indeed the multi-award-winning jazz iconoclast: BROWNMAN ALI. So I reached out to him and asked if he could perhaps help programme these nights so we could present a full schedule -- and he not only immediately agreed to help, but also suggested we try staffing the nights with Artists affiliated with his label, since they&#x27;d be the most likely to be willing to haul themselves out here to Guelph to be part of these nights. And that&#x27;s how we ended up with such top-tier programming from Sept 15 to 18. JAY YOO (Thr-Sep-15) is the guitarist from the label&#x27;s electric-jazz group SNAAGLE; BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO (Fri-Sep-16) is the multi-award winning flagship group on the label (often touring the globe); CHRISTIAN ANTONACCI (Sat-Sep-17) is a 23 year old rising trumpet star Brown&#x27;s been keeping his eyes on and Christian&#x27;s backing musicians (Jack and Mateo) also play in the label&#x27;s BROWNMAN AKOUSTIC TRIO; and lastly NICK MACLEAN QUARTET (Sun-Sep-18) is one of the label&#x27;s busiest modern jazz groups, fronted by 6x Global Music Award winning Nick Maclean, who has been a protégé of Brown&#x27;s since he was 22, and who is about to release his 4th recording on Browntasauras Records. We are unimaginably grateful to all these musicians, and Brown himself, for coming to Guelph to play my venue and make us be part of the Guelph Jazz Festival. I would personally like to invite you to join us here at Royal City Studios on any (or all!) of these nights to bear witness to what some of the country&#x27;s best in jazz sound like.
