MindFuel

In this workshop, Gr 5-12 STEAM educators will discuss holistic approaches of teaching and learning mathematics in the classroom.

Two-Eyed Seeing, or Etuaptmumk, is the concept of seeing our world, including STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), from both the western and Indigenous perspectives.As part of NSERC's Science Literacy Week, MindFuel is able to host this online workshop, with presenting partners, Dwayne Lasas (Empowerment Speaker, Cree Language Specialist, Natural Music Specialist, Song Writer, and Knowledge Seeker), Gordon Naylor (Assistant Principal at Maskwacîs Cree High School) and Dawn Pratt (Founder of Askenootow STEM Enterprise Inc.). Presentations will highlight sharing of experiences teaching high school math and science to support student success, historical and contemporary issues affecting Indigenous People’s and western (mathematics) education, and practical and authentic strategies for educators to incorporate Indigenous perspectives in the classroom to support a more holistic approach in teaching and learning math.All participants will be provided with a storytelling activity that they can bring back to their classrooms, the WEETSEETOWIN card game developed by Dwayne Lasas (https://weetseetowin.ca/) and be entered into a draw with the chance to win a prize to further their learnings from the workshop.This workshop is open to Grades 5-12 math educators. He is a registered member of Waterhen Lake First Nation and went to Beauval Indian Residential School until he graduated. He served in Council for his First Nation for 2 terms. Dwayne was also Tribal Vice Chief of the Meadow Lake Tribal Council for a period of almost 7 years and was proud to serve the 14,000+ First Nations members of the 5 Cree, and 4 Dene Bands that make up the Tribal Council.Dwayne has been speaking Cree since he was old enough to stand. He attended the late Dr. Freda Ahenakew’s “Indigenous Language Specialist Program” at the Saskatchewan Indian Cultural Centre. He also loves trying many other languages from around the world. By studying other languages, he finds surprising similarities. Music has been a big part of Dwayne’s life since 1973 and was 7 years old at the time. This is when he got his first guitar. Since then, he has become a multiple instrumentalist, a multiple genre musician, a natural music specialist and a songwriter. Dwayne sings in Cree, Spanish, Hawaiian and English.Dwayne tunes his ukulele to the calls of nature and jams with all animals that call, howl, screech, chirp, and use natural sonar to communicate with each other. Also, with this tuning, he aligns this frequency with Traditional Indigenous singers throughout the world. By combining mathematics, natural music and universal connection teachings, he has created a Cree language recovery program and a card game called WEETSEETOWIN™. This card game promotes laughter, reconciliation, partnership, healing and empowers entire communities.G﻿ordon NaylorTansi kahkiyaw, kitatamiskatinawaw (Hello everyone, I greet you all). I am a proud member of the Muskoday First Nation and have been a math teacher in reserve schools for the past 9 years. I am currently an assistant principal at Maskwacis Cree High School which is situated in Nipisihkopahk (Samson Cree Nation, in Maskwacis, Alberta). I grew up primarily in Wabasca, Alberta and attended the University of Alberta - Augustana Campus to receive my Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Physics. I then went on to pursue my Bachelor of Education degree in Secondary Education at the University of Alberta.D﻿awn PrattTansi! Anin!Dawn Pratt is a member of the Muscowpetung Anihšināpēk Nation. With varied experience in science education and an indomitable spirit, she has forged a professional consultancy company, askenootow STEM Enterprise, as an Indigenous STEM Educational expert for the past 20 years (STEM = science,technology, engineering, and math). Dawn earned a Master of Science degree with a specialization in the design of organic adsorbent materials directed toward the removal of arsenic from contaminated water (University of Saskatchewan, 2011).Dawn is fundamentally driven to reinstate Indigenous Elder and Knowledge Keeper teachings into STEM education for the benefit of Indigenous Peoples’ futures. She seeks to amplify Indigenous STEM role models and Indigenized STEM content by transforming instructional practices and curricula in ways that embrace Indigenous cultural, linguistic, and land-based traditions and resources. She remembers the moment her career calling took shape; in grade 4, her parents bought her a chemistry kit. Since then, she has pursued her passion for understanding the chemical world and sharing the joys of scientific discovery with children, youth, and adults. As part of realizing her passions, she is deeply dedicated to raising her two daughters to approach the world with a curiosity for STEM, replete with confidence in the Indigenous heritage she too derived from her family.askenootowstem.com
