How To Get Into Grad School 2022

The Afro-Caribbean Mentorship Program (ACMP) is an initiative dedicated to supporting the success of Afro-Caribbean Black (ACB) and other racialized undergraduate and graduate students on campus. We recognize that the experiences of ACB and other racialized minorities are unique due to the potential micro-aggression that they may encounter throughout their academic and professional experiences. Advocating for an inclusive campus is ACMP’s mission while supporting the success of racialized students.Through this mentorship program, participants will be able to: 1) Be able to understand financial literacy 2) Build confidence 3) Enhance social network 4) Be aware of their current behaviours that might make others feel uncomfortable, while being open to change 5) Understand how to access Carleton’s academic resources as a way to better their student experience.

This October, the Afro-Caribbean Mentorship Program (ACMP)
 will host its 4 th  annual “How To Get Into Grad School” event. This program will
 be in-person and streamed online via Zoom technologies to accommodate
 student learning. Like past events, the forum will highlight strategies and
 pathways for Afro-Caribbean Black (ACB) students wanting to pursue
 graduate school. The 2-hour session will feature guest speaker, University of
 Manitoba alum NDP MLA Jamie Moses (St. Vital).
The program will be moderated and facilitated by Dr. Warren Clarke
(Department of Anthropology). Dr. Clarke will provide insight from his learned
 experience working up to and through the graduate programs he attended. 
 
Also, we will invite the audience to an open discussion where attendees
 can interact and ask questions about the best way to prepare for postgraduate
 education. Topics of discussion during this event will include:

·        What is grad school?
·        How to identify the field of study that is right for you
·        Connecting with faculty 
·        Building an academic network
·        What is an academic CV, and how should I prepare mine?
·        Applying to grad school
 

This event continues ACMP’s initiatives to encourage Afro-Caribbean Black
 (ACB) high school, undergraduate, and graduate students to be positive while
 inspiring them to recognize their potential and educating them on how to
 recognize and handle anti-blackness in academia. Although this is a safe
 space for African decent students to learn, the ACMP encourages all people
 from different races and ethnic backgrounds to attend and learn while working
 in a relationship of solidarity with all humans. All are welcome!
This event will include high school, undergraduate students, graduate
 students, and faculty from Canadian Universities and the broader
 community.  We also encourage attendees to use the opportunity to network
 for their professional development.
