Advanced Research on Mental Health and Society (ARMS)

The Advanced Research on Mental Health and Society and Department of Sociology proudly presents the Fulbright Research Chair Series!

L.R. Wilson Hall

The ARMS Spotlight: Fulbright Research Chair Series begins this November with talks from Dr. Ann Garland and Dr. Imani Michelle Scott, hosted jointly by ARMS and the McMaster University Department of Sociology! Dr. Scott's talk will take place remotely beginning at 1:30 pm. Dr. Ann Garland will be presenting: Building Bridges, Connecting Research and Practice in Mental Healthcare. Dr. Imani Michelle Scott will be presenting: Psychological Risks of Advocacy, Exploring Mental Health Needs of Black and Indigenous Human Rights Advocates in the U.S. and Canada. Over the past 30 years, Dr. Garland's teaching, research, and practice has been devoted to improving community-based mental health care by strengthening the integration of scientifically and practically derived knowledge. A former Professor of Psychiatry at U.C.S.D and of Counselling and Family Therapy at U.S.D., she has trained hundreds of mental health professionals from multiple disciplines, and published over 120 articles and book chapters. Dr. Garland holds degrees from Yale University, Columbia University, and U.C. Berkeley. On November 15, at 1:30 pm EST, Dr. Garland's talk will cover how collaborative partnerships between researchers and practitioners have the potential to bridge the gap between research on mental health care and the actual practice of such care. In this presentation, Dr. Garland will both present an over-arching model of research-practice partnership development and maintenance based on cross-disciplinary research, as well as provide examples of some challenges and rewards of actual partnerships, while identifying the factors that facilitate and inhibit success. Dr. Garland will also share qualitative feedback from therapists and researchers who participated in a collaborative project, reflecting on how it changed their subsequent attitudes and practices.

Dr. Imani Michelle Scott is a scholar and consultant in human communication, conflict analysis, and peacebuilding. Dr. Scott holds a PhD in Conflict Analysis & Resolution and was recently awarded the honour of becoming a Fulbright Research Chair in Mental Health & Societal Wellbeing at Canada's esteemed McMaster University. She is passionately committed to dismantling racial conflict, oppression, and violence, through acknowledgement, healing, reconciliation, and transformation. On November 29, at 1:30 pm EST, Dr. Scott's talk will explore and highlight the specific mental health and self-care needs of Black and Indigenous Human Rights Advocates (HRAs) living in Canada and the U.S. Despite studies indicating that HRAs experience significantly higher rates of work-related psychological risks than those in other occupations, the number of groups identifying as Human Rights defenders has dramatically increased across the world. Alongside this increase there has been heightened involvement of advocates who identify as Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Colour (BIPOC). Dr. Scott will explore and highlight how access to quality healthcare in BIPOC communities is substandard, how BIPOC experiences of daily trauma far exceed those of non-BIPOC individuals, and that repeated exposure to racial trauma can increase PTSD.
