Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG) is an independent non-profit public art gallery committed to the acquisition, presentation, interpretation and dissemination of contemporary art for the benefit of the local arts community. Its programs explore a variety of issues and include exhibitions, talks, lectures, tours and publications. OAG has a growing permanent collection of historical and contemporary works associated with the region. It also houses the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art, which consists of more than 1,600 works of art assembled by Ottawa collectors O.J. and Isobel Firestone, who acquired the works from the early 1950s to the 1970s.__________

During this talk, she will reflect on her artistic career, discuss her dynamic practice, and touch on her works in the OAG’s current exhibition, <a href="https://oaggao.ca/whats-on/exhibitions/dark-ice/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">ᓯᑯ ᕿᕐᓂᖅᓯᓯᒪᔪᖅ | Dark Ice: Leslie Reid and Robert Kautuk</a> (April 23, 2022 - March 5, 2023). This program will begin with a cocktail reception in the OAG Sky Lounge, followed by the artist talk and presentation in our Alma Duncan Salon and Spencerville Gallery (level 3). Please note this event will be in English.This artist talk will also be streamed live on the OAG’s <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ottawaartgallery" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Facebook page.</a>Artist biographyLeslie Reid studied at Queen's University, Kingston, and the Chelsea College of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art in England. On her return to Canada she taught Visual Arts at the University of Ottawa, where she is now Professor Emerita. She exhibited in the landmark exhibition Some Canadian Women Artists (National Gallery of Canada, 1975 – 76), in celebration of the first International Women’s Year, and also represented Canada at the Paris Biennale. Her retrospective exhibition Leslie Reid: A Darkening Vision was curated by Diana Nemiroff (Carleton University Art Gallery, 2011), and her paintings were exhibited in Builders: The Canadian Biennial (National Gallery of Canada, 2012). Her recent work results from travel to the High Arctic, and explores climate change and sovereignty issues and their effects on northern communities. Participation in the Canadian Forces Artists Program resulted in the solo exhibition Mapping a Cold War (Founders' Gallery, The Military Museums, Calgary, 2016). Video work from her participation with the Canada C3 2017 expedition, travelling through the Northwest Passage, was recently shown in Open Channels (Âjagemô Gallery, Canada Council, 2019).

À son retour au Canada, elle a enseigné les arts visuels à l’Université d’Ottawa, où elle est maintenant professeure émérite. Elle a participé à l’exposition phare Quelques artistes canadiennes (Musée des beaux-arts du Canada, 1975 – 76), organisée à l’occasion de la première Année internationale de la femme, en plus de représenter le Canada à la Biennale de Paris. Son exposition rétrospective Leslie Reid : A Darkening Vision a été montée par Diana Nemiroff (Carleton University Art Gallery, 2011), et ses peintures ont fait partie de l’exposition Les Bâtisseurs. La Biennale canadienne (Musée des beaux-arts du Canada, 2012). Ses travaux récents, inspirés de voyages au Grand Nord, abordent les changements climatiques et les questions de souveraineté ainsi que leurs effets sur les collectivités nordiques. Sa collaboration au Programme d’art des Forces canadiennes a donné lieu à l’exposition solo Mapping a Cold War à la Founders’ Gallery des Military Museums, à Calgary, en 2016. La création vidéo née de sa participation à l’expédition Canada C3 2017, qui a traversé le passage du Nord-Ouest, a été présentée dans Passages communicants (salle Âjagemô du Conseil des arts du Canada, 2019).
