PeerNetBC Winter Series: Principles of Peer Support

Helping people make connections is our passion. People who have strong connections to others have improved health, and communities where people are connected are healthier places to live. We provide training, information and resources for strengthening peer support groups and peer-led initiatives throughout British Columbia. We work with many diverse groups and communities including First Nations, rural, urban, multicultural, youth and online. PeerNetBC is a non-profit, registered charitable organization.Our work takes place on the unceded homelands of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations.

PeerNetBC

You will be introduced to PeerNet Principles of Peer Support and learn how to create authentic and well-functioning peer support groups.

Curious about peer-led organizing and expanding your understanding of what facilitation means? Join us for 3 interactive, virtual workshops in January, 2023. No prior experience is required; however, participants will benefit from registering in the full series!We ground our work in anti-oppression and decolonial values. If you are new to PeerNet BC workshops, we recommend registering in the Planting the Seeds of Anti-Oppression session to learn more about why we use these frameworks. This workshop is foundational!Workhop 1, Planting the Seeds of Anti-Oppression:<ul><li> January 11, 6pm - 8:30pm. Participants will reflect on their personal relationship to power and broaden their understanding of equity and working together.</li></ul>Workshop 2, Principles of Peer Support: <ul><li>Jan 19, 1-3:30pm. Participants will be introduced to PeerNet Principles of Peer Support and learn how to create authentic and well-functioning peer support groups based on these principles.</li></ul>Workshop 3, Nuts and Bolts of Facilitation: <ul><li> Jan 21, 10:00am-12:30pm. Participants will build on new and existing skills and tools necessary for effective group facilitation.</li></ul>

About This Workshop - Principles of Peer Support:Are you starting a new group, or is the group you work with needing a framework for understanding how you work together? The principles of peer support are the foundational elements for creating successful peer-led groups. In this 2.5 hour workshop, participants will be introduced to these principles, identify the differences between groups that are peer-led and those that are not, and learn how to create authentic and well-functioning peer support groups based on these principles.

Accessibility <ul><li>These sessions will be offered online using the Zoom platform. Please make sure you have the app or web-browser compatibility to use Zoom on your device. </li><li>These sessions will be 2.5 hours long with a short break. You are welcome to keep your camera on or off, however some activities might be more visual.</li><li>We encourage you to attend to your access needs (eg. eating, bathroom breaks, etc.) during the event. You are also welcome to use the chat box at any time instead of audio.</li><li>We will provide Zoom automated closed captioning.</li><li>We are confirming ASL interpretation is available for our workshop and will update soon.</li><li>For more information and /or accessibility requests, please e-mail Alexa, at alexa@peernetbc.com. Registration &amp; MembershipA non-refundable $5 reservation fee is required for all registrants, per workshop, to secure your seat. The price for our workshops is an additional suggested donation of $15 to $75 dollars. Please identify a price that suits your financial situation. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds! Please contact alexa@peernetbc.com for support if you cannot afford the reservation fee or if you have technical barriers in the registration process. We want to see you there, so please reach out. Please let us know if you will need an invoice for your registration.MembershipPeerNetBC is seeking to expand our membership relations. To address this, we are now requiring membership in order to attend a PeerNetBC standard workshop. When you become a member at PeerNetBC, you will be invited to participate in our annual general meeting and have the opportunity to support us in other ways. This is incredibly valuable to us, and we definitely appreciate your membership. We also acknowledge that membership is a construct in which we must comply with in the non-profit sector.In addition, your membership supports PeerNetBC to continue to:<ul><li>Provide capacity-building workshops and consultations to peer-led initiatives across the province.</li><li>Engage with community to inform our organization’s work.</li><li>Provide low-cost or free programming for multi-marginalized individuals and communities.</li><li>Partner with and support grassroots groups, especially prioritizing those led by BIPOC and multi-marginalized folks.</li></ul>Workshop &amp; Membership Fee Ticket Information:The price for our workshops and membership at PeerNetBC is an optional additional suggested donation of $15 to $75 dollars. Your Facilitators for Planting the Seeds of Anti-OppressionBen is a transnational and transracial, queer and trans mixed adoptee living on the unceded and ancestral homelands of the xwməθ kwəyəm (Musqueam), sḵwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and selílwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) nations.Over the last 15 years he has worked with various organizations and groups to center queer, trans and gender diverse experiences, in particular those of BIPOC communities. Ben’s external work at PeerNet mostly revolves around facilitation and consultation with community partners, but also really enjoys the more internal work of co-encouraging/creating staff culture and care.Mari is a white settler, able-bodied, and cis-gendered woman living on stolen xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) homelands. In her work at PeerNetBC, Mari bounces between operations and finances, and community collaborations and facilitation.Mari loves working with people to make things happen! Whether creating a truly collaborative budget, organizing a climate justice event, or facilitating a group unpacking their power dynamics to be in better relationship with each other, Mari is there for it.As someone in her late 20s who has worked with youth for many years, Mari navigates the new privileges of adulthood while continuing to care deeply about young people’s leadership and liberation as well as climate justice, dismantling white supremacy, and collective emotional healing. In addition to her work at PeerNetBC, Mari can be found swing dancing, playing music, community organizing, geeking out about musical theatre, or eating ice cream 🙂.
