<p>The <a href="https://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies</a> at Simon Fraser University is pleased to present <a href="http://scholar.uoa.gr/kkefalea/home" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Kirki Kefalea</a>, Professor of Comparative Religious Literature at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.</p><p>On Friday, January 27, at 2:30 PM PT, join us in person for her talk, "Contemporary Modern Greek Female Poetry: The Poetic Work of Katerina Anghelaki-Rooke."</p><p>The event will be moderated by Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies faculty member, Eirini Kotsovili.</p><p>Attendance is free. The event is open to the public. <h2>Abstract</h2><p>Katerina Anghelaki-Rooke was born in Athens in 1939 and died in 2020. Regarded as one of the most significant female contemporary Greek poets of the 21st century, she wrote eighteen books of poetry, which were translated into more than a dozen languages and won the Greek National Prize for Poetry in 1985 as well as the Greek Academy’s Poetry Prize in 2000. In her lecture, Dr Kefalea will present the central topics of Anghelaki-Rooke&#x27;s poetry: The body, myth, history, nature, gender and language; concepts that are inextricably entangled, in her poetry. References will be made to the poetic collections Magdalene the Vast Mammal (1974), The scattered papers of Penelope (1977), The Triumph of Constant Loss (1978), which draw loosely on myth for their structure, turning the ancient Penelope into a modern woman poet; reflecting on how poems anchor the abstract metaphysics of myth in the rituals of everyday life.</p>

<h2>Speaker bio</h2><p><a href="http://scholar.uoa.gr/kkefalea/home" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Kirki Kefalea</a> is Professor of Comparative Religious Literature in the Department of Social Theology and the Study of Religion for the School of Theology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She received her PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of Saarland in Germany. She is also the director of the MA Programmes of the Department of Social Theology and the Study of Religion. Her research explores comparative literature, the history of European literature, the history of modern Greek literature, the perception of Greece in modern European literature ("Imagology"), the relationship between literature and religion, and the influence of the Bible in modern European and modern Greek literature. </p>

<h2><a target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a>Moderator</h2><p><a href="https://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/about/people/d-kotsovili.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Eirini D. Kotsovili </a>studied history and Hispanic studies at McGill University (B.A) and literature at the University of Oxford (M.St, D.Phil), where she was also Junior Dean (Somerville College). At SFU, she is a faculty member in the Department of Humanities, a committee member of the Stavros Niarchos Centre for Hellenic Studies and the Institute for the Humanities, as well as an associate member of the Department of Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies and the Department of World Languages and Literatures. She leads the Memory and Trauma research cluster, together with Alessandra Capperdoni and James Horncastle in the Department of Humanities and serves as an Editorial Board member of the Journal of Modern Hellenism. Her research and teaching interests revolve around the notions of gender and identity, Modern Greece (comparative/transnational approach) and contemporary cultural production reflecting on the relation between past and present within various socio-political contexts.</p><h2>Registration</h2><p>Guests can register for the event through Eventbrite.
