Vicarious trauma & secondary stress

Members of the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers are required to complete annual professional development, which must include training or activities related to preventing and managing vicarious trauma and secondary stress.

<p>Bring your lunch and join us online during African Heritage Month! </p><p>Let's talk about how to develop perspective and personal practices in order to keep our wellness cup full and thrive when working in a world where racism continues to dominate the systems that we all function within. </p><p></p>

<h2>Speaker</h2><p><strong>Tanya McHarg</strong> has been a social worker for the past 21 years. </p><p>After earning her BSW at the University of Calgary, Tanya worked at the Calgary Drop In and Rehabilitation Center supporting people experiencing homelessness, addiction and mental health issues, before joining the Government of Alberta, working both in direct practice and leadership roles. Tanya has also served as the team leader for the PSECA Team (Protection of Sexually Exploited Children's Act) in Alberta, working to address child sexual exploitation and human trafficking. </p><p>Originally from the East Coast, Tanya has recently returned here to Mi’kma’ki to complete her MSW at Dalhousie University with a research focus on anti-Black racism and its holistic health implications. </p><p>Tanya has a passion for supporting others in their healing journeys by way of self-compassion and mindfulness, and will be speaking about both of these strategies.</p>

<h2>Eligibility</h2><p>Must be a current member of the <a href="https://nscsw.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Nova Scotia College of Social Workers</a> to attend; all active, associate, retired, and student members are welcome. There is no other prerequisite for this session. </p><p>You'll need a device that can use <a href="https://zoom.us/test" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Zoom</a>, and a reasonably reliable internet connection.</p>

<h2>Category</h2><p>Participating in this one hour session can fulfil part of NSCSW's newly mandated professional development requirements for all Nova Scotia social workers to complete <strong>training for prevention/management of vicarious trauma &amp; secondary stress </strong>or<strong> anti-racist &amp; anti-discriminatory practice</strong>.
