DescriptionThe talk will include an introduction to the various bat species found in Ontario, the threats they face, and why we should be concerned about them, followed by an exploration of how the <a href="https://www.torontozoo.com/bats/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Toronto Zoo’s Native Bat Conservation Program</a> is working to help them, and some of the success stories to date. Speaker Biography: <a href="https://www.torontozoo.com/mediaroom/press2022/20221214" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Toby </a>caught his first bat at the age of eleven and hasn’t looked back. He spent his teenage years hanging around the woodlands and churchyards of southern England learning about their biology and how to study them. He studied biological sciences at the University of Oxford, including an honours project examining social relationships among bats in a long-term banding study. He moved to Canada in 2013 to undertake a research master’s investigating bat migration around the Great Lakes, supervised by Dr. Brock Fenton. Since completing his master’s, he has remained in Ontario, working on a variety of bat conservation programs, and authoring a field guide to the bats of the province. Since 2016 he has worked on the Native Bat Conservation Program at the Toronto Zoo, leading projects focussed on monitoring and learning about Ontario’s bat fauna and improving public perception of these remarkable creatures. This special program is connected to the <a href="https://downsviewpark.ca/sustainability" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Downsview Park Urban Forest Resilience Project </a>supported by TD Bank Group.Please note that this session will be held only in English._﻿_DescriptionLa conférence comprend une description des diverses espèces de chauves-souris que l’on trouve en Ontario, les menaces auxquelles elles font face et les raisons pour lesquelles nous devrions nous en préoccuper. Cette présentation sera suivie d’une présentation des efforts du <a href="https://www.torontozoo.com/bats/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Programme de conservation des chauves-souris indigènes du Zoo de Toronto</a> pour les aider, et de certaines réussites connues jusqu’à maintenant. Biographie du conférencier : <a href="https://www.torontozoo.com/mediaroom/press2022/20221214" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Toby</a> a attrapé sa première chauve-souris à l’âge de onze ans et ne l’a jamais regretté. Pendant son adolescence, il traînait dans les boisés et les cimetières du sud de l’Angleterre, ce qui lui a permis d’en apprendre plus sur leur biologie et la manière de les étudier. Il a étudié les sciences biologiques à l’Université d’Oxford, et a notamment participé à un projet spécialisé sur les relations sociales parmi les chauves-souris dans le cadre d’une étude de baguage à long terme. Il a déménagé au Canada en 2013 pour faire une maîtrise de type recherche sur la migration des chauves-souris autour des Grands Lacs, supervisée par Brock Fenton. Après avoir terminé sa maîtrise, il choisit de demeurer en Ontario, où il travaille sur divers programmes de protection des chauves-souris et écrit un guide de poche sur les chauves-souris de la province. Depuis 2016, il travaille sur le Programme de conservation des chauves-souris indigènes du Zoo de Toronto et dirige des projets axés sur la surveillance et l’étude de la faune de chauves-souris de l’Ontario, et sur l’amélioration de la perception publique de ces créatures remarquables. Ce programme spécialisé est lié au <a href="https://parcdownsview.ca/durabilite" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Plan de résilience de la forêt urbaine du Parc Downsview</a> soutenu par le Groupe Banque TD.
