<p>The <a href="https://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies</a> at Simon Fraser University is pleased to present <a href="https://jewishstudies.washington.edu/portfolio/devin-naar/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Devin Naar</a>, Isaac Alhadeff Professor of Sephardic Studies, associate professor of history and Jewish studies, and affiliated faculty in the Hellenic Studies program at the University of Washington in Seattle.</p><p>On Friday, March 3rd, at 2:30 PM PT, join us in person or online for his talk, ""Unmixing" Peoples? The Fate of Jews amidst the Exchange of Populations between Greece and Turkey," as part of the SNF Centre for Hellenic Studies' Spring Seminar Series.</p><p>The event will be moderated by the Director of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies, professor Dimitris Krallis. </p><p>Attendance is free. The event is open to the public and will be recorded.</p><p>This programming is made possible thanks to the generous support of the<a href="https://www.snf.org/en/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF)</a>.</p><h2>Abstract</h2><p>A century ago, Greece and Turkey executed massive population transfers that resulted in the expulsion of most Orthodox Christians from Turkey and most Muslims from Greece. Formalized by the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923, the population expulsions dramatically transformed the demographics on both sides of the Aegean Sea. Exempted from the transfers, Jews in the region remained in situ as two million people were uprooted around them. How did the population exchange impact the fate of the largest Jewish community in the region, in Salonica (Thessaloniki), and factor into the ongoing contestation over national identity? Rather than "unmix" the populations, to what extent did the exchange remix them and produce new, volatile tensions, and even unexpected opportunities, along the way?</p>

<h2>Speaker bio</h2><p><a href="https://jewishstudies.washington.edu/portfolio/devin-naar/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Devin E. Naar</a> is the Isaac Alhadeff Professor of Sephardic Studies, associate professor of history and Jewish studies, and affiliated faculty in the Hellenic Studies program at the University of Washington in Seattle. A former Fulbright scholar to Greece, Naar received his PhD from Stanford University. His book, Jewish Salonica: Between the Ottoman Empire and Modern Greece, won a 2016 National Jewish Book Award and the 2017 Edmund Keeley Prize from the Modern Greek Studies Association. He serves on the academic advisory council for the new Holocaust Museum under development in Thessaloniki.</p>

<h2><a target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a>Moderator</h2><p>Born and raised in Athens, where he lived until his college years, <a href="https://www.sfu.ca/hellenic-studies/about/people/d-krallis.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dimitris Krallis</a> studied political theory at the University of Athens and Byzantine History at Oxford and at the University of Michigan, where he obtained his doctorate. He teaches Byzantine history at Simon Fraser University’s Department of Humanities and is the Director of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies. He is the writer of two books, including, <a href="https://www.palgrave.com/us/book/9783030045241" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Serving Byzantium's Emperors: The Courtly Life and Career of Michael Attaleiates. New Approaches to Byzantine History and Culture Series</a>, which was recently <a href="https://alexandria-publ.gr/shop/vios-ke-politia-enos-vizantinou-mandarinou/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">translated into Greek</a>. He has also written numerous articles and co-translated the work of a major Byzantine historian, Michael Attaleiates. His research explores the social, political, economic and intellectual history of Byzantium, as well as its modern reception.</p><h2>Registration</h2><p>Guests can register for the event through Eventbrite.
