Join us in learning how militant Hindu nationalism utilizes bureaucratic politics from leading anthropologist, Thomas Blom Hansen.

The demolition of the Babri Masjid shapes the choreography of Hindutva politics ever since: outrage against a perceived (historical) injustice to Hindus fuels mass spectacles that culminate in attacks on Muslims and destruction of Muslim property. With the political dominance of the BJP across much of India, this model of political action has merged with the longstanding bureaucratic politics of demolishing what are deemed ‘unauthorized structures’ that offend a desire for order. Drawing on recent ethnography from central India, Thomas Blom Hansen will reflect on how repertoires of agitation and vengeance has merged with bureaucratic rationalities into an emergent bulldozer-raj.
