SFU Medical School: Research Focus - Faculty and Graduate Students (online)

SFU is hosting this online session to build internal collaboration and help shape planning decisions for the future medical school.

Thank you for your interest. This information session and discussion is now at capacity. A recording of the session will be made available after October 18th, and all students, faculty and staff will be invited to provide additional input through a short survey. The survey will open October 18th and will remain open until mid-November. Stay tuned for other engagement opportunities in the future!

The provincial government is enhancing primary care and access to family doctors across B.C. Part of this work includes the creation of a <a href="https://www.sfu.ca/vpacademic/sfu-medical-school.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">medical school at SFU</a> to educate more doctors to serve underserved populations and to improve care.Medical school curriculum will be built on the following pillars:<ol><li>Prepare graduates to meet the prevention and primary care needs of diverse communities and populations across B.C.</li><li>Educate physicians to work in team-based primary care settings that are patient-centered and socially accountable.</li><li>Commit to reciprocal community partnerships in the development and implementation of the medical school.</li><li>Embed and equalize Indigenous knowledge systems.</li><li>Provide community-based learning opportunities.</li></ol>Now that the provincial government has confirmed that planning for the medical school can proceed, SFU is excited to be working with the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills, the Ministry of Health, the University of British Columbia and the health authorities across the province, as part of the long-term solution to improve primary care for British Columbians. We are scheduling faculty, research faculty, staff and Indigenous community dialogues for March and April 2023.<h3>SFU Faculty and Graduate Students are invited to join Dugan O&#x27;Neil, Vice President, Research and International (VPRI) for this interactive 2-hour online Information Session and Discussion focussing on the topic of research. </h3>Building upon <a href="https://www.sfu.ca/content/dam/sfu/vpacademic/files/medschooldocuments/SFU%20Medical%20School%20Proposal-Internal%20Engagement%20What%20We%20Heard%20Report.pdf" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">feedback received in previous phases of engagement</a>, SFU&#x27;s Office of the Provost and Vice-President Academic would like to give a chance for Faculty and Graduate Students to get updates, provide feedback and explore how they can benefit from, be involved with or partner with the new medical school, specifically on the topic of research.The session will be divided into three main parts:Introduction and overview: The Who, What, Where, When, Why and How. SFU representatives will share updates and next steps for planning the SFU Medical School.Questions and answers: During the session all participants will have a chance to submit any medical program-related questions. The top questions will be answered.Small breakout groups: To hear from you directly, participants will be divided into small groups to provide ideas and feedback on some key questions. Your input will help inform future planning and guide subsequent engagement.<h3>*************</h3><h3>Accessibility: </h3>This event will be presented using Zoom.
