A talk with Dr. Lonny Brooks discussing game design and how it can be leveraged for Afrofuturist community building and social justice.

In this talk with Dr. Lonny Brooks, participants will learn about the principles of game design thinking and how they can be leveraged for Afrofuturist community building and social justice. Participants will explore the principles of narrative design and non-linear storytelling, and how they can be used to create compelling storylines and immersive worlds.Through a discussion of &quot;AfroRithms from the Future&quot; (ARFTF), a collaborative project with Ahmed Best and Jade Fabello, Dr. Brooks will provide an overview of game design, including principles such as player-centered design, prototyping, and playtesting.

<h3>A﻿bout the Guest Speaker</h3>Dr. Lonny Avi Brooks is a scholar representing the East Bay. He is a professor at California State University, East Bay in Strategic Communication &amp; Foresight. Lonny received his Ph.D. in Communication at UC San Diego and an MA in Library and Information Science at UCLA. He is a co-founder of the AfroRithm Futures Group and the former Chair of the Communication And The Future (CATF) division of the National Communication Association.Renowned for his scholarship surrounding every shade of Afrofuturism, Lonny has served as a visiting professor for the Stanford d.school.He has authored and co-authored a vast array of futurist studies and explorations in international publications like the Journal of International Communication, USC Annenberg Press, and Afrofuturism 2.0: The rise of Astro-Blackness anthology.

<h3>A﻿bout this Event</h3>T﻿his event is co-presented by InterAccess, <a href="https://www.astrosankofa.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">AstroSankofa Arts Initiatives</a>, and <a href="https://www.bsam-art.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Black Speculative Arts Movement (BSAM)</a>, as part of Rhizomatic Pedagogies, an InterAccess-led pilot project aiming to foreground the new media leadership and innovation of Black, Indigenous, and Disability Justice communities.-﻿Building off of the illustrated vision of Carnegie Hall's first-ever commission art piece by interstellar artivist Quentin VerCetty in 2021, AstroSankofa Arts Initiatives brings forward more opportunities and production for Black creatives and youth who work within the realms of Black science and speculative fiction in addition to the five dimensions of Afrofuturism (2.0): metaphysics, aesthetics, theoretical and applied sciences, social science and programmatic spaces.Inspired by the work of Afrofuturist music icon June Tyson's Astro-Black mythology and the West African Akan people's proverb and semiotic adinkra symbol known as sankofa, which means to learn from the past in order to inform the future. The word “astrosankofa” was coined by the incorporation's founder artivist Quentin VerCetty when he was the first ever artist to be commissioned by Carnegie Hall foundation making an art piece of that name.-﻿The Black Speculative Arts Movement is a global community of intellectuals from the African Diaspora that seek to present, promote, and support human centered speculative imagination to catalyze streams of new thought that envision an inclusive future society.
