2023 National AccesAbility Week Stakeholder DialogueMainland Community Services Society (MCSS) is very excited to announce our upcoming National AccessAbility Week celebration dialogue entitled “Creating Inclusive Communities". The event will be executed with the goal of providing an enriching experience built on the foundations of inclusivity, knowledge, and experiences. What is the Creating Inclusive Communities Dialogue (CICD)?The Creating Inclusive Communities Dialogue (CICD) is a multi-stakeholder dialogue for both community leaders and change-makers working across AccessAbility sectors in British Columbia. CICD seeks to engage community leaders and changemakers to advance systems change conversations and innovative solutions to issues impacting Persons Living with Disability in BC. This dialogue is part of a growing conversation about addressing the systems that affect Persons Living with Disability. Through a number of awareness-building activities, we would sustain the conversation to provide a “Highlight on Accessibility and Inclusion: Addressing Systemic Discrimination” - a project fully funded and supported by the Federal Government of Canada.What benefits are there for participating stakeholder organizations?Through participating in this dialogue, participants will bring the following capacities back to their organization:<ul><li>A deeper understanding of equity, power, ableism, disability justice, and accessibility. </li><li>Motivation to build collective solidarity for accessibility within their community culture.</li><li>Public relations and leadership skills geared towards generating support and resources for organizational initiatives on accessibility. </li><li>Collaborate with other leaders and practitioners to develop, and share initiatives to address issues specific to Persons Living with Disabilities. </li><li>A platform to promote and share the work of their communities broadly in the province</li><li>Enhanced networks and first-person relationships with social impact funders and policy-makers in the accessibility sector. </li></ul>The dialogue is scheduled on June 2nd, 2023 between 10-00 am to 4:00 pm at UBC Robson Square. We are happy to work with your organization to find ways this opportunity can benefit you in your mission-driven work. This free event is open to a maximum of 2 people per organization, and registration is required. We anticipate this event will reach capacity – please register via eventbrite by June 1st, 2023. G﻿UEST SPEAKERHarmony Bongat - Harmony is a disability advocate, co-facilitator, content creator, and educator. She brings a wealth of knowledge and perspective to the many facets of living with a disability and has sat on many committees and panels in the past representing her queer, disabled and Asian identity. She brings invaluable lived experience and information on the many facets of people living with a disability such as disability abuse, misrepresentation, and non-equitable access. She believes that “Information is power and if this power is denied to marginalized people, it consequently re-perpetuates marginalization by excluding them.”F﻿ACILITATOR Heather McCain - Heather is the founder and executive director of CAN (Creating accessible neighborhoods). Heather’s CAN acronym was founded under the belief that their organization “CAN” make a difference. Heather identifies as queer, non binary and disabled, who understands the intrinsic need to recognize and honour people’s intersecting identities. Heather is passionate about raising awareness and mindfulness towards the value of lived experience and leadership of those impacted when it comes to matters of ‘Disability Justice’. Heather breaks down visible and invisible myths and false perceptions of disability as it exists in our world today. Their goal is to utilize disability justice values and practices to work towards building cross-movement organizing that moves away from segregation, isolation, and ableism towards accessibility, inclusion, connection, and interdependence - thus laying the groundwork for impactful social change.

L’événement sera organisé en vue d’offrir une expérience enrichissante basée sur les fondements de l’inclusivité, des connaissances et des expériences.Qu'est-ce que le Dialogue sur la création de communautés inclusives (CICD) ?Le Dialogue sur la création de communautés Inclusives (CICD) est un dialogue multipartite, destiné aux responsables communautaires et aux acteurs du changement qui travaillent dans les secteurs de l’accessibilité en Colombie Britannique. Le CICD cherche à engager les responsables communautaires et les acteurs du changement pour faire avancer les débats sur le changement des systèmes et les solutions innovantes aux problèmes qui affectent les personnes vivant avec un handicap en Colombie Britannique. Ce dialogue s'inscrit dans le cadre du débat croissant sur la question des systèmes qui affectent les personnes vivant avec un handicap. À travers diverses activités de sensibilisation, nous soutiendrons le débat afin de faire un « Gros plan sur l'accessibilité et l'inclusion : Lutter contre la discrimination systémique ». Ce projet est entièrement financé et soutenu par le gouvernement fédéral du Canada.Quels sont les avantages pour les organisations participantes ?<ul><li>En participant à ce dialogue, les participants transmettront les capacités suivantes à leurs organisations :</li><li>une compréhension approfondie de l’équité, du pouvoir, du capacitisme, de la justice pour les personnes ayant un handicap et de l’accessibilité ; </li><li>la motivation à construire une solidarité collective pour l’accessibilité au sein de la culture de leur communauté ;</li><li>des compétences en matière de relations publiques et de leadership visant à générer un soutien et des ressources pour les initiatives organisationnelles en matière d'accessibilité;</li><li>une collaboration avec d’autres responsables et praticiens afin de développer et de partager des initiatives visant à résoudre les problèmes spécifiques aux personnes ayant un handicap;</li><li>une plateforme pour promouvoir et partager le travail communautaire à l’échelle de la province;</li><li>une amélioration de la mise en réseaux et la formulation des relations personnelles avec les bailleurs de fonds ayant un impact social et les décideurs politiques dans le secteur de l’accessibilité.</li></ul>Le dialogue est prévu le 2 juin 2023 entre 10h00 et 16h00 à UBC Robson Square.
