Ending the practice of race correction in health care: lessons from Canada

The Canada-US Coalition to End Race Correction in Health Care (CU-CERCH) is a bi-national initiative to eliminate preventable health inequities that systematically target Black people, leading to clinical practices that produce unnecessary suffering, lower quality of life and premature death.To do this, we:Advocate across health systems and jurisdictions for a systematic approach to ending race correction in Canada,  the United States and internationally.Work directly with health care providers, organizations and decision-makers who are committed to ending race correction.Provide accurate information to Black patients and Black communities.CU-CERCH was founded by a group of Black scientists, clinicians, medical students, public health professionals, researchers and others. Founding members include:  REDE4BLACKLIVES, the Black Public Health Collective, the Black Medical Students’ Association of Canada, the Health Equity and Justice in Medicine and the Anti-racism in Medicine Action Roundtable #AIMART on Twitterspace and Clubhouse and Black Doc Village.

ICAM 2023 Conference, Canada-US Coalition to End Race Correction in Health Care Workshop Date: Saturday April 15, 2023, Time: 9:45 am – 1:00 pm *This is an in-person session at the ICAM/AFMC 2023 Conference in Quebec CityLearning objectives By the end of this session with the Canada-US Coalition to End Race Correction in Health Care/CU-CERCH, attendees will be able to: 1) Identify race correction where it shows up in medical education, research electives, clinical practice and public health practice. 2) Distinguish between de-adoption processes that are sustainable, systematic and focused on person-centred care vs. processes that are unsustainable, ad-hoc, and focus on clinicians and/or institutions.3) Describe the work of the Canada-US Coalition to End Race Correction in Health Care. Her research illuminates how technology can undermine or bolster human rights in the context of clinical care, rehabilitation science and public health. Her interdisciplinary and applied approach is designed to critically appraise current applications of technology while developing and implementing interventions that seed new, ethical futures. As a result of her ground-breaking work, she was named the inaugural AI, Medicine and Data Justice Post-Doctoral Fellow at Queen’s University. https://www.endracecorrection.com/media/Saleem Razack is the Chair of the EDI and Anti-Racism Committee of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC). He joined the faculty of the University of British Columbia/British Columbia Children’s Hospital on January 1, 2023 after a 25-year career as a pediatric intensivist and medical educator/education researcher at McGill University. He is the recipient of the AFMC May Cohen Award for outstanding contributions to equity in medical education, the Haile T. Debas Award for contributions to equity in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at McGill and the Pediatric Chairs of Canada Award for outstanding contributions to Medical Education. Dr. Razack is the Co-lead for the Medical Education Working Group of the Canada-US Coalition to End Race Correction in Health Care.Patricia O’Campo is an international leader in social epidemiology and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Population Health Intervention Research. She is the Executive Director of the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at Unity Health Toronto and a Professor of Epidemiology at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto. Dr. O’Campo is a member of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and the Royal Society of Canada. She is the Implementation Science Advisor for the Canada-US Coalition to End Race Correction in Health Care.Jo-Ann Osei-Twum is a founding member of the Black Public Health Collective. The Collective is committed to critical public health work and practice that is rooted in principles of social justice, systems transformation and Black well-being. Jo-Ann’s work lies at the intersection of race-ethnicity, GIS, spatio-temporal patterning of health and inequities. She is the Co-lead of the Public Health Working Group of the Canada-US Coalition to End Race Correction in Health Care.GB Olarewaju is a final year medical student and future Public Health and Preventative Medicine Resident at the University of British Columbia and was the inaugural Chair of the Black Medical Students Association of Canada (BMSAC). While completing his medical education, he continues his advocacy work on various EDI advisory groups for the Faculty of Medicine, as chair of the BMSAC Research Committee and is the Co-lead of the Medical Residents &amp; Learners Working Group of the Canada-US Coalition to End Race Correction in Health Care.What is “race correction”? Health care providers often use tests to assess a patient’s health. In many cases, health care providers calculate test results differently for Black people than they do for everyone else. Overall, “race correction” means that Black people are diagnosed late, or never diagnosed at all, for serious conditions from heart, kidney and lung diseases to cognitive impairment. It also means that Black people are systematically excluded from timely access to life-saving treatments like organ transplants and other surgeries. “Race correction” has no scientific basis because “race” is not biological. It is a social construct that is applied differently in different times and in different places. In fact, scientists have shown us that people have more in common genetically across “racial” groups than within them. Having melanin (melanin colours our hair, skin and eyes) does not make a person described as a &quot;Black person or of African descent&quot; a different “race” of human being.
