Debahjemuhjig Theatre Group: Developing the Creation Centre

Lynda Trudeau and guest speakers will share the journey of Debahjemuhjig Theatre Group's conception to present use and their future plans.

Debahjemuhjig Theatre Group create original theatre/live performance productions that represent Indigenous world views, language, culture, and histories. Recently, Debajehmujig Theatre Group embarked on a project to develop their Creation Centre. General Manager, Lynda Trudeau will speak of the journey from conception to present use and future plans. Facilitated by JP Longboat, Lynda will be joined by Johanna Berti and Marjorie Trudeau to round out the presenters circle for this online session. The Indigenous Creative Spaces Project brings together a network of communities to support the development of Indigenous sovereign creative spaces across Ontario. Guided by an Indigenous Advisory Circle and supported by ArtsBuild Ontario, the project is building a framework of knowledge and experience from an Indigenous cultural and historic perspective, and bundling up the needs, recommendations and sustainability for future Indigenous infrastructural development within the arts ecology of Ontario. As part of the overall project, this series of online dialogues has been facilitated with Indigenous communities across Ontario, and we welcome you to today’s discussions from whichever territory you arrive.Lynda Trudeau is from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory. Biimshkwaa-zhe Chichok noswin, Mukwa dodem, Anishinabe Odawa kwe. Lynda is the current General Manager of De-ba-jeh-mu-jig Theatre Group / Debajehmujig Storytellers, an Indigenous multi-arts organization focused on advancement and preservation of Anishinaabe oral traditions and storytelling, through brave and courageous works of art - additionally building bridges of understanding between Indigenous and Non-indigenous persons, across both rural and urban settings.Over the course of her public service career, Lynda has achieved many goals, as well as has earned recognition for work in Indigenous governance and management. She has been privileged and honoured to work with political, cultural and arts leaders in Ontario and throughout Canada.An accomplished Indigenous contributor, Lynda has over 20 years experience of governance, public affairs, community engagement, and senior administrative experience; holding various titles including Trust Administrative Support Officer, Governance Unit Coordinator, Tenant Relations Officer, and General Manager; as well as former Board Director and Vice President for Governance Development Network; Waubetek Business Development Corporation; former Committee member for Wikwemikong Finance and Administration committee; and a former Trustee for Wikwemikong Pointe Grondine Trust. Currently, Lynda is an advisory member for St. Francis Xavier Coady Institute&#x27;s The Circle of Abundance; and a contributing member of the Creative Indigenous Spaces project with Arts Build Ontario; a current Trustee for the National Indian Brotherhood Trust Fund. Finally, Lynda was also a selected candidate for the Business/ Arts Executive Leadership mentorship Program in 2021/2022, she was partnered with the National Ballet of Canada Executive Director. In her Current Capacity as General Manager for Debajehmujg, Lynda is tasked with management, operations, and strategic implementation to Indigenization of the operations both tactically and critically.A graduate of University of Waterloo - Master of Environment and Business, Northwood University Bachelor of Business Administration, St. Francis Xavier University’s Coady Institutes Indigenous Women in Leadership, and Cambrian College of Applied Arts and Technology’s Business Administration - Business Management diploma program, and is currently working on sustainability for Economic, Environment, Social, and cultural challenges as well as the United Nations Social Development Goals through governance perspectives and primarily through an indigenous lens, at the local, regional, provincial, national, and international level. This coming spring, Lynda will also be starting a Master of Fine Arts program in Cultural Administration at the Institute of the American Indian Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Joahnna Berti joined Debajehmujig in 1993 in arts administration, marketing, and community outreach, after working in Toronto for The Second City in the late 80s. She began an improvisational theatre group with young members of the company at Debajehmujig in the summer of 1994. The Best Medicine Troupe became an improvisation training and art education team that worked within First Nation communities across Canada. Interns were accepted into the Troupe in 1997, allowing the company to develop and offer a full three-year program of arts education, community-based training, and original creation for emerging Aboriginal artists.Over the years, Joahnna has contributed much to Debajehmujig’s Outreach and Training programs, to administration, and to the company and community as a whole. As an experienced and skilled grant writer, she has helped many artists and organizations reach their goals and expand their worlds.Joahnna continues to work with Debajehmujig Storytellers, supporting program development in training and land/community-based performance art practices, utilizing arts animators to facilitate community cohesion and community development in Northern community contextsNote: These dialogues may explore culturally sensitive material.
