<P><SPAN>What really happens when you are raised by the state, and why? </SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN></SPAN>This talk will:</P>
<OL>
<LI><SPAN>explore leading data on youth outcomes after care; </SPAN></LI>
<LI><SPAN>analyze the youth policy rut; </SPAN></LI>
<LI><SPAN>build a case for a cultural shift towards system-centred policy making, and </SPAN></LI>
<LI><SPAN>discuss how to acquire change through advocacy.</SPAN></LI>

<P>This event is presented by the <A HREF="https://nscsw.org" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="NSCSW" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Nova Scotia College of Social Workers</A> (NSCSW) and <SPAN>Exploring the Criminalization of Youth in Care (ECYC)</SPAN>. ECYC is a group of concerned youth workers, lawyers, social workers and academics who are exploring the link between care and youth criminalization.</P>
<P>The <A HREF="https://childwelfareonthebrink.org/" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="Child welfare is on the brink" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><STRONG><EM>#Childwelfareonthebrink</EM></STRONG></A> campaign calls on all Nova Scotians to <A HREF="http://pushpolitics.ca/clients/nscsw/" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="Contact your MLA" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">contact their MLA</A> and demand a better future for the children of this province. Vulnerable children and youth deserve to have their voices heard when decisions are being made that profoundly affect their well-being; they need and deserve an advocate.</P>

<P><SPAN>Child rights advocate Jane Kovarikova grew up in foster care since the age of six and began living on her own at age 16. Understanding the unique circumstances and challenges faced by youth-in-care inspired an ongoing academic and professional commitment to bettering youth outcomes. In 2009, she graduated with MSc in Human Rights from the London School of Economics. Later, her advocacy as Chief of Staff to an opposition member of provincial parliament was instrumental to developing legislation that will reduce youth homelessness in Ontario. Currently, Kovarikova serves as the Vice President of Simcoe-Muskoka Family Connexions and is a PhD Candidate at Western University in the Department of Political Science.</SPAN></P>

<H3><STRONG>What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?</STRONG></H3>
<P>If you're not familiar with MSVU campus, <A HREF="https://www.msvu.ca/en/home/aboutus/safety-security/campusmap.aspx" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">check out the map before you get here</A>. There are four pay and display units (coin and credit card only) at MSVU:</P>

<LI>In the parking lot between College Rd and the Aboriginal Student Centre.</LI>
<LI><SPAN>At the corner of Evaristus closest to the large parking lot</SPAN><SPAN>.</SPAN></LI>
<LI>At the bottom of the Steps in front of the EMF</LI>

<P>We encourage you to arrive early if you are driving, as parking near the Rosaria building may be limited. Consider carpooling, or taking public transit. </P>
<P>Bus routes <STRONG>39</STRONG>, <STRONG>80</STRONG> & <STRONG>90</STRONG> can be used to travel to and from MSVU (routes 81, 82, 135 & 196 also serve the area but will stop service before our event ends).</P>
<H3><STRONG>Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?</STRONG></H3>
<P>No. Save a tree! However, if you're bringing guests, please make sure everyone attending is registered on Eventbrite beforehand. We want to make sure we have enough chairs for everyone, and ensure that we don't exceed the capacity of the room.</P>
<H3><STRONG>I know someone outside Halifax who can't get to town for the event. Can they watch from home?</STRONG></H3>
