Join us virtually in conversation with artist Karabo Mooki! His exhibition Dogg Pound Days is on as part of the CONTACT Photography Festival

Karabo Mooki has been documenting the Jo’burg skate scene for the last 12 years.“It’s been a very interesting journey seeing the generational shift in skateboarding-” observes Mooki, “- the adventures we got into….being able to see the sides of life a lot of people don’t see, that aren’t in the magazines.”His exhibition, Dogg Pound Days, speaks to the growing punk counterculture in the township of Soweto, Johannesburg. The exhibition sees these punk rockers and skateboarders break down the stereotypes of a movement which in South Africa has been seen as “white culture”, and take ownership of it in informal skate parks giving an alternative eye to the black youth of Soweto.This talk will explore this series and Mooki&#x27;s practice - and there will be time for Q&amp;A! A﻿bout the Artist:Karabo Mooki is a photographer and filmmaker born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. Karabo&#x27;s work highlights perceived differences and shows an authentic and honest side to life in South Africa. Exploring race, gender, sexuality and class, his work celebrates the power that thoughtful images hold. He gravitates toward following unique narratives and under-represented faces, opening conversations through his work by offering social commentary, and focusing on portraying authentic emotion.Karabo’s exhibited internationally, including in Miami, New York, Sweden, Denmark, Cape Town, London, New Zealand, Australia and Berlin. He has won multiple industry awards for his photojournalism and has been Featured in publications such as Rolling Stone Magazine and Huck.
