Overview

“Basic Income” is a term that recently has entered common usage. This workshop will outline the difference between Basic Income and current systems. Social workers will be introduced to contrasting Basic Income models, using the NSCSW code of ethics as a guideline.

NSCSW members who participate can count one hour of this workshop towards their required professional development in ethics.



Penni Burrell, RSW, MSW, is a private practitioner and independent researcher with over 35 years of social work experience. Burrell has taught social work students at Dalhousie University and social service students at Nunavut Arctic College, and has trained health care staff in ethical decision making processes. She has direct experience in service delivery of fiscal programs and considerable knowledge of basic income frameworks. Recently, she was a presenter at the June 2019 North American Basic Income Congress in New York. Burrell currently volunteers as chair of the Central Kings Community Health Board.
