Overview

An informative and engaging session of dementia training in order to feel the difference this training can make, not only in your professional life but in your personal life too.

Using Positive Approach to Care™, this training provides an overview of dementia, the changes (physical, emotional, intellectual, social) in the person living with dementia and some proven and effective techniques on how to positively interact with someone living with dementia. Using the Adult Experiential Learning Cycle and an interactive learning style, the learner will be able to carry their newly acquired skills on their own body (specifically their hand) and be able to reference these skills quickly and effectively. SAIDSO speaks specifically about how to “doing-with” instead of “doing-for” the person living with dementia.

Marcy MacPherson has a Bachelors degree in Psychology from Edinboro University, a Bachelors degree in Social Work from Dalhousie University, and is the Valedictorian for her Master’s program from University of Waterloo. She is a strong believer in being a CarePartner while doing "with" someone living with dementia and not "for" someone living with dementia. She advocates for independence, empowerment, autonomy, dignity and justice for the individual, and self-determination for everyone involved. She has spent the last few years working towards a higher level of understanding how dementia affects the people who live with it, work with it, and love someone with it.
She is the owner of Still Alive Inside: Dementia Supports and Opportunities (SAIDSO) and has provided many informative sessions to the Nova Scotia population including health care professionals. Marcy is certified as a Positive Approach™ to Care (Teepa Snow) Trainer and is also a Positive Approach™ to Care certified Coach. Marcy will use her certified trainings to present the dementia material in an easy to understand and interactive way. Marcy is known for bringing fun and unforgettable messages to a very challenging topic while everyone learns and begins to understand more about dementia and how to interact with someone living with dementia.

Marcy is also a Palliative and Supportive Care social worker with the Nova Scotia Health Authority and is certified to train the Gentle Persuasive Approach to care.

Marcy’s motto: Living, Loving, and Learning Through Dementia Together.
