The Nova Scotia College of Social Workers is releasing a new report about child welfare by Wisdom2Action.

<p>The <a href="https://nscsw.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Nova Scotia College of Social Workers</a> (NSCSW) contracted <a href="https://www.wisdom2action.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Wisdom2Action</a> (W2A) to consult with a wide range of stakeholders on behalf of children and families in the province, with the goal of answering two core questions:</p><ol><li>What would it take for every child in Nova Scotia to live in a home and a community free of poverty, violence, and harm, that allowed them to reach their full potential?</li><li>What would it take to create a child protection system that embraced the UN Declaration on the Rights of the Child, as well as the calls from the Black and Indigenous Nova Scotians for reform as enshrined in Truth and Reconciliation Commission and in the Inquiry into the Home for Colored Children?</li></ol><p>Their consultation included social workers, researchers, community organizations and community members.</p><p>While these questions are complex, W2A’s findings consistently reflect what is well-known by those working and living within Nova Scotia’s child welfare system: </p><ul><li>continued systemic racism</li><li>negative impacts of 2017 Children and Family Services Act amendments</li><li>pursuit of “efficiency” that doesn’t lead to positive outcomes</li><li>insufficient resources for marginalized communities</li><li>punitive and inadequate policies and social work practices</li></ul><p>In short, the system is in dire need of transformation. But the report’s recommendations do offer a way forward. The proposed changes include a fiscal framework to transform child and family well-being in Nova Scotia, with additional $354M operating funding plus $531M capital spending.</p><p><strong>Please join us as we share the report&#x27;s findings and recommendations. </strong></p>

<h1>S﻿peakers</h1><h2>Lynn Brogan, RSW</h2><p><strong>(she/her/hers)</strong></p><p>Lynn is the president of NSCSW.  With over 30 years of experience in the human services field, working in several sectors including persons with disabilities, employment and income assistance, housing, mental health and child welfare, Lynn has held several senior executive positions within government during her career including: the executive director of the Disabled Persons Commission, the regional administrator of Community Services and acting deputy minister. </p><p>Lynn has a passion for leading transformative strategic change initiatives focused on improving the quality of life for Nova Scotians. Lynn is especially proud of her leadership role in the work that led to the passing of ground breaking and historic accessibility legislation in Nova Scotia, as well as her advocacy for social workers dedicated to child welfare reform.</p><h2>Dennis Stuebing, Ph.D.</h2><p><strong>(he/him/his)</strong></p><p>Dennis is director and co-owner of W2A, a consulting firm with a social enterprise commitment.  W2A supports non-profits, governmental organizations, and other businesses, to facilitate positive change and strengthen communities primarily in gender justice and 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion, children&#x27;s rights and youth engagement, and mental health and substance use.  </p><p>Dennis has earned a Doctorate in Global Studies from the University of Saint Joseph (Macao), a Master of Arts in International Development from Saint Mary’s University (Halifax), and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with an Option in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Waterloo (Waterloo).  His research focused on children’s rights, namely the right to protection and participation, in developing country contexts during emergencies. He has a background in project management and policy analysis in government and civil society organizations in children’s rights, child protection, human rights, international development and humanitarian assistance.  </p><p>Dennis lives in the traditional and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq (Mi’kma’ki) also known as North Kentville, Nova Scotia. </p><h2>Alec Stratford, MSW RSW</h2><p><strong>(﻿he/him/his)</strong></p><p>A﻿lec is the executive director and registrar of NSCSW.</p>
