Sparking the interests of Ottawa's BIPOC  Youths in the arts, film and media industry.

<h2>About The Youth Media Showcase </h2><p>The inaugural SandBox Youth Media Showcase is scheduled for August 19 th in Ottawa, Ontario. The program will include a variety of speakers and a screening of <strong><em>“Undocumented”</em></strong><strong>  </strong>a powerful mini documentary that follows the life of Akil Augustine’s journey to Canadian citizenship. Along with the film, we will host four speakers who will give our audience a glimpse of what life is like in the media industry. Our goal is to spark interest in arts, film, and marketing related fields. The theme for this edition of SandBox is <em><strong>“The Power of Media”</strong></em>. Every speaker will demonstrate a different perspective and, to close, Akil will introduces his documentary.Join us for a 90-minute educational series that will close with a 30-minute Q&amp;A session with the panel of speakers. This will allow the audience an opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue about the viewing. Onsite we will have Lenz Films which will set up a mini experience center to give our participants a firsthand look at the tools used and available through this <strong>BIPOC</strong> owned company.</p><h2>About Sandbox</h2><p>Sandbox is a comprehensive digital and media training hub aimed at empowering BIPOC creatives and fostering diversity in the media landscape. While open to everyone, we are placing an additional focus on BIPOC youth who may not realize the opportunities available to them in the media industry. Sandbox initiatives will be delivered via workshops, training, mentorship programs and showcases in various fields within media, such as journalism, digital storytelling, media production, and more.</p><h3>Screening the Documentary <em>Undocumented</em>;</h3><h3>There are an estimated 500,000 undocumented persons believed to be living in Canada. Half are reported to live in the Greater Toronto Area. “Undocumented” attempts to illustrate  the many contributions this group can make to Canada through the story of one<strong><em>. </em></strong></h3><h3></h3>

<h2>Akil Augustine [Guest Speaker]</h2><p>Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Akil Augustine brought to Canada at the age of 4 without his parents, permission or knowledge. After living for more than a decade and a half in the shadows Akil would go on to file for landed immigrant status under humanitarian and compassionate grounds on his own at the age of 18 with the help of the FCJ refugee centre and former El Salvadoran freedom fighter Francisco Rico and his family. </p><p></p><p>After a two decade spanning career at the fore front of Toronto’s blossoming basketball scene and media landscape a group of Ryerson students joined forces with Akil to tell his story after the passing of his mentor and ally Francisco Rico. Francisco had always encouraged Akil to use his story to speak for those who were unable to stake their claim in the country they contribute to. <p>CEO of Skyline Sports Global<strong> </strong>-<strong> Ronny Musikitele</strong> has been covering Canadian athletes since 2015. He’s written for Basketball Buzz magazine, U SPORTS, Carleton Ravens, Humber Hawks and more. While attending Carleton University and Humber College, he worked with both Men’s and Women’s basketball teams at both respective schools. After getting an inside look of two of Canada’s top basketball programs, he took what he learned and launched his own sport management company called - Skyline Sports Global. It’s purpose is to help athletes capitalize on their image. While also being a resource for athletes to tap into the sport management industry.</p>

<p>A true basketball maven, <strong>Marika Guérin</strong> was named Manager of Communications and Community for the Ottawa BlackJacks in January of 2020, moving from Québec to help launch the expansion pro team in the nation’s capital. She is responsible for media relations, community development, social media, website management and communications, while serving on the CEBL PR Committee.A native of Ste-Victoire de Sorel, Québec, Guerin lived in Montreal for five years and attended McGill University, where she earned a Graduate Diploma in Applied Marketing while working as a Communications Assistant for McGill Athletics and Recreation.From 2014-17, while completing a Bachelor of Kinesiology, Guérin played for the McGill women’s basketball team and helped the Martlets win the first U SPORTS Basketball National Championship in school history along with three provincial titles.The point guard previously attended Cégep de Montmorency in Laval, Québec. After missing her first season due to a torn ACL, Guérin and her team won two consecutive CCAA national championships and provincial titles.When she’s not on a basketball court, Guérin enjoys creating art and giving back to the community.</p>

<p><strong>Manock Lual </strong>is a former pro-basketball player who came to Canada in 1992 as a refugee from South Sudan. He grew up in the nation’s capital city of Ottawa, in the Overbrook neighbourhood, which houses many newcomers. Manock Lual’s basketball talent helped him to earn a scholarship, and he graduated from the University of Prince Edward Island in 2012.In 2017, Coach Manock founded Prezdential, a non-profit that is dedicated to bridging the gap faced by disadvantaged youth in Ottawa, and particularly racialized youth living in low-income communities. Mr. Lual offers free basketball and life skills programming strengthened by partnerships with the Boys and Girls Club, Ottawa Community Foundation and local community associations and resource centres.  Coach Manock’s ability to coach young athletes goes beyond the game of basketball.  His individualistic style of coaching and charisma throughout training sessions applies to all ages, and practice sessions are more than about building better players but becoming better people through sport. Coach Manock fosters an environment of acceptance and positivity that follows participants into their communities.  During a year plagued by limitations for physical closeness, Coach Manock showed how his leadership translates into community development. Coach Manock and his team at Prezdential Basketball supported the youth of Ottawa through initiatives that aided their general mental health and wellbeing. Prezdential Basketball now includes financial literacy programming, cooking classes, a youth media program, an annual backpack drive, after school programming, and the Overbrook Show. While his basketball prowess is renowned, it is his work to mentor youth, using basketball as a tool, which makes Coach Manock remarkable. In 2021, he was recognized by CBC as Trailblazer and one-to-watch. In 2021, the Mayor of Ottawa also recognized him as one of the City’s most outstanding leaders. He was presented with the Brian Kilrea Awarded for Excellence in Coaching. This award is part of the Order of Ottawa ceremony, a prestigious event that recognizes exceptional citizen contributions in the many areas of civic life including arts and culture, sports, business, philanthropy, or other fields that benefit the citizens of Ottawa.</p>
