Lots of prizes!P﻿ARKING: There will be a dedicated, complementary parking lot for event attendees.K﻿EYNOTE: Dr. Keith Carlson“’The Spirits Speak More Directly with the Elders As They Near The End, Just Like they Do with Little Children’: Cultural and Historical Perspectives on Memory and Dementia” Since the Enlightenment, western society has generally assessed memory in terms of a person’s ability to accurately recall information. People who struggle to recall past experiences, or to accurately recite previously-known information, have tended to be pathologized. And while the important work of neuroscientists continues to find new ways to prevent or repair the impairment or damage of the centers and networks within the brain associated with memory and recall, there is still important work to be done to better understand the culturally specific and historically contingent ways in which various individuals and communities understand the phenomenon western science has identified as dementia and age-related cognitive decline. In this presentation Prof. Carlson will discuss some of the different ways various cultures at different times, have understood ‘memory’ and what it means ‘to remember’ or ‘to forget.’ He will situate this discussion within the context of age-related memory loss and dementia. He will draw specific examples from his research as an ethnohistorian working with Indigenous communities.
