<h1>Navigating the Social Determinants of Mental Health</h1><h2>Three-Part Lunch &amp; Learn Series with Alec Stratford</h2><p>This enlightening three-part series aims to explore the significant impact of the social determinants of mental health, the necessary policies to address these determinants, and the importance of taking action to implement these policies. </p><p>Join us for this insightful series as we collectively strive toward better mental health outcomes by addressing social and environmental factors. Comprehend the influence of your vote in driving social change and policy implementation. Learn effective ways to engage with elected representatives to voice community concerns. We&#x27;ll investigate how societal factors influence mental health at individual and community levels and scrutinize the policy choices that exacerbate these issues. </p><p>Develop a deep understanding of the social determinants of mental health. Identify and explore how these determinants influence individuals, families, and communities. Discuss the existing policies that fail to address these critical issues effectively.</p><h3><a href="https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/690784433837" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Part 2 - Policies for addressing the social determinants of mental health (Sept 22)</a></h3><p>In the second part of our series, we shift our focus to the crucial policies needed to address the social determinants of mental health. We&#x27;ll delve into the prevailing poverty levels in Nova Scotia, critique the government&#x27;s current strategies, and understand poverty&#x27;s financial and societal implications. </p><p>Gain a thorough understanding of the depth and impact of poverty in Nova Scotia. Critically assess the government&#x27;s current approach and strategies toward poverty. Recognize the financial and societal burdens caused by poverty. </p><h3><a href="https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/690787703617" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Part 3 - Mobilizing action to implement social determinants of health policy (Oct 4)</a></h3><p>The final session of our series moves from understanding to action. We&#x27;ll discuss the power of democracy in driving policy changes and emphasize the significance of both individual and collective actions in implementing social determinants of health policies. </p><h2>Eligibility</h2><p>There are no prerequisites for this session. You&#x27;ll need a device that can use <a href="https://zoom.us/test" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Zoom</a>, and a reasonably reliable internet connection. Community members enrolled in any of our partners&#x27; member organizations are eligible to purchase a partner ticket; just let us know which one you&#x27;re part of when you sign up.</p><h2>Professional development tracking</h2><p>For members of NSCSW, participating in this event may fulfil part of the <a href="https://nscsw.org/practice/professional-development-standards/#pdMandated" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">mandated requirements</a> for all social workers in Nova Scotia to complete annual <strong>training or activities related to social justice</strong>. Alternatively, members who have already completed this requirement for the year may track this session as <strong>formal professional development</strong> instead, as defined by NSCSW&#x27;s guidelines for <a href="https://nscsw.org/pd" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">annual professional development</a>.
