Community Arts Council of Vancouver organizes the Vancouver Outsider Arts Festival in partnership with the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre. 2023 Vancouver Outsider Arts Festival

Our festival showcases the work of artists who exist outside of mainstream artistic institutions, and we strive to provide a platform for these artists to share their unique perspectives and artistic visions with the community.

All are warmly welcome to this movement workshop led by <a href="https://www.fianakawane.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Fiana Kawane</a> on Kathak, a beautiful South Asian classical dance form. This workshop is presented at the 7th annual <a href="https://www.voaf.ca" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Vancouver Outsider Arts Festival</a>, which showcases the work of visual artists and performers outside of mainstream art institutions. A short dance demonstration will be followed by an introduction to foundational rhythm cycles, footwork, and movements core to Kathak. No prior preparation or experience in Kathak is expected. This workshop is open to all ages, abilities, and dance experience with curiosity about the form. The objective is to actively engage with the dance form, learn about its intimate relationship with music and the heartbeat, and experience techniques of somatic grounding integral to Kathak. Items to bring: Water to drink and comfortable clothing to move in.

<a href="https://www.fianakawane.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Fiana Kawane </a>is an independent dance artist and choreographer on unceded xwməθkwəy̓ əm, Skwxwú7mesh, Stó:lō, and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh territories. She specializes in movement practices rooted in Kathak, a South Asian classical dance form known for its storytelling, pirouettes, and footwork. She has performed independently and ensemble across countries like Canada, India, and Japan. Her recent dance work has been supported by the Dance Centre, New Works, and Vines Art Society among others. In her practice, she centres interdisciplinary collaboration and community-engaged methods. She is working on her PhD research in poetry and ecology at the University of British Columbia.

BC Culture Days is administered by the Greater Vancouver Society to Bridge Arts and Community. We all work together, but are funded separately.
