KHA: Ghost Variables

Silence is a non-profit arts organization dedicated to presenting adventurous new concerts, workshops, screenings, and special events to the broader Guelph community. Silence is unbiased in regard to genre, culture, class, and tradition. The organization fosters risk-taking, innovation, and experimentation in all forms of music and sound, as well as other artistic expressions presented in the space. Silence strives to be the most accessible, safe, adventurous space for artists of all kinds in the region.

Ghost Variables is a new improvising ensemble based in Hamilton, Ontario.Its members areGary Barwin, Connor Bennett – reedsChris Palmer, guitarDavid Lee, double bassMike Hansen, percussionTo the music of Ghost Variables, this quintet of composer/improvisers brings a wide range ofskills. Connor Bennett is known as a saxophonist with such ensembles as Blue Moss, YlangYlang, and Tidal Pool, and as a designer of custom mouthpieces. Gary Barwin is well-known as aperformance poet with a PhD in musical composition. Chris Palmer, busy in Hamilton as a guitarteacher and choral soloist, has played with Lee as onstage musicians in the acclaimed SkyGilbert play “Pat and Skee” at Theatre Aquarius, and joins Lee-Palmer-Bennett on their CD “ThePhantom Hunter.” David Lee is a veteran bassist in Canadian ensembles for many years, andMike Hansen is a busy sound and installation artist who has recorded with Michael Snow, GlenHall, and John Butcher.Do they play jazz? The US scholar Thomas Brothers calls “jazz music” the interaction of thefixed, and the variable.
