Join Debbie Held, expert spinner, and learn how to spin a variety of silk fibres using suspended drop spindles in this online event.

Does the thought of spinning silks intimidate you? If so, you’re not alone. Join us virtually for a three-hour introduction to spinning silks, using a simple suspended (”drop”) spindle as our only equipment in creating these luxurious yarns. Instructor Debbie Held will share her approach to deciphering silks in various commercial preparations, and we’ll explore how different spinning draws affect results. Debbie will also show you how to ply your singles to maximize the lustrous properties of your silk yarns, then how to set the twist. You’ll gain confidence in your own ability, and you may just learn to use your spindle in a whole new way. Our silk sampling will include Peduncle Tussah, Tussah sliver, Mawata hankies, Bombyx roving, red Eri silk, silk merino, and camel/silk pencil roving, and a bonus knitted kerchief pattern designed by Debbie for you to spin for and knit after the class. Skill Level: Students must be able to spin a continuous yarn using a suspended (“drop”) spindle and should be comfortable doing so (with any fibre). Supplies needed: •	Students will need at least one long and fast-spinning drop spindle of your choice to class, weighing approximately .50–1 oz/14–28 g. (If you have a few favourites, bring them all, so long as they’re not too heavy.) If you’re looking for an affordable and well-made spindle that’s ideal for silk spinning, I recommend the 2” whorl Golding Micro Ring in any weight. Cherry wood versions are about $40 USD, but there are other equally affordable woods to choose from.
