Next-Generation Sequencing has revolutionized life sciences research. This workshop will focus on how it can be used to study MircoRNA.

<h2>Summary:</h2><p>Next generation sequencing (NGS) is a powerful high-throughput technology that can be used to uncover underlying mechanisms of health and disease. Historically limited to DNA and RNA sequencing of tissues, platforms are continuously developing and now include sequencing of single cells and small RNAs. Among small RNAs are microRNAs which are approximately 22 nucleotides in length. MicroRNAs are emerging as important biomarkers, mediators of disease, and therapeutic targets. NGS technology can be applied to profile all known and novel microRNAs in a biological sample. This workshop will provide learners with an in-depth understanding of the method for microRNA library preparation for NGS. </p><h2>Learning objectives:</h2><p>•	Identify different methods for microRNA library preparation. </p><p>•	Describe the steps in microRNA library preparation. </p><p>•	Appraise the quality of a microRNA library. </p><h2><strong>Instructor:</strong></h2><p>Dr. Shabana Amanda Ali has an interdisciplinary research background in musculoskeletal biology, with over 12 years of experience in osteoarthritis. She completed her PhD in the Institute of Medical Science at the University of Toronto where she used microarray in osteoarthritis and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP)-sequencing in chondrosarcoma to elucidate disease mechanisms. She completed her first Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Western Ontario and is currently pursuing her second Postdoctoral Fellowship  with Dr. Mohit Kapoor at the Krembil Research Institute. She established the Next Generation Sequencing Platform in The Arthritis Centre for Diagnostic and Therapeutic Innovation at Krembil and has optimized a protocol for microRNA sequencing of biofluids. Her current research focuses on applying next generation sequencing to identify novel biomarkers for osteoarthritis.
