<h2>Summary:</h2><p>Mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics is a powerful tool for biological discoveries. The applications of MS-based proteomics are continually being expanded and refined allowing for  researchers to  identify proteins and post-translational modifications, assess protein-protein interactions and monitor enzymatic reactions. </p><p>This workshop will provide learners with the theory and applications of this technique for addressing a variety of research questions using discovery and targeted proteomics. Learners will come away knowing the fundamentals and challenges of MS-based proteomics and how to critically analyze and follow up on the data gathered from this most valuable tool.</p><h2>Learning objectives:</h2><p>At the end of the workshop, learners will be able to:</p><p>•	Describe the theory and applications of mass spectrometry-based proteomics</p><p>•	Design experimental plans to address a research question</p><p>•	Analyze data obtained from mass spectrometry workflows </p><h2><strong>Instructors:</strong></h2><h3>Mohadeseh Mehrabian, Ph.D.</h3><p>Dr. Mohadeseh Mehrabian has studied in Teheran and London before completing her PhD at the university of Toronto and the University of California San Francisco supported by the prestigious Trillium and Weston International Fellowship awards. In her doctoral work, Dr. Mehrabian has combined CRISPR-Cas9 genetic modification skills with quantitative proteomics to reveal a deep knowledge of prion protein biology, a key molecule involved in neurodegenerative diseases. These findings have initiated an exciting research into identification of drug targets for Alzheimer’s and prion diseases, a class of neurological disorders with no available cure yet. Her ongoing postdoctoral research involves characterizing a candidate drug and assessing the clinical viability of this compound.  </p><h3>Sofia Farkona, Ph.D.</h3><p>Dr. Sofia Farkona graduated as a Chemist from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and obtained the MSc diploma in Clinical Chemistry from the same institution. In 2013 she joined University of Toronto, Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology department for her doctoral studies. During her doctoral research, Dr. Farkona developed and validated analytical techniques (monoclonal antibodies, ELISA and MS-based targeted methods) monitoring the poorly studied protein CUZD1 and used them to investigate its clinical validity in malignant and non malignant human diseases facilitating future investigations aiming to delineate the role of CUZD1 in physiology and pathobiology. Her current work as a postdoctoral fellow includes the development of MS-based targeted methods for the quantification of angiotensin II-regulated proteins in urine and bronchoalveolar lavage.</p><p></p>
