Caribbean Christmas Dinner and Dance

Established in 2011, the mission of the Guelph Black Heritage Society is to restore and maintain Heritage Hall, originally known as the British Methodist Episcopal (BME) Church, built in 1880 by formerly enslaved Black individuals and their descendants who arrived in the area via the Underground Railroad. The building is a cultural, historical and social community centre serving to promote Guelph and Wellington County's distinctive place in Southwestern Ontario's rich Black heritage.

Come out and enjoy the tastes and sounds of the Caribbean and dance the night away! 

This year, the GBHS salutes Barbados. Barbados is an eastern Caribbean island and an independent British Commonwealth nation. Bridgetown, the capital, is a cruise-ship port with colonial buildings. Around the island are beaches, botanical gardens, the Harrison’s Cave formation, and 17th-century plantation houses like St. Nicholas Abbey. Local traditions include afternoon tea and cricket, the national sport. Dance is a strong part of any culture, and Barbados is certainly no exception. You’ll soon discover dancing is very popular in Barbados. So much so, that you would be hard pressed to find a handful of girls and boys on the island who have not had some sort of dance instruction and training during their childhood. Old School Ballroom dancing, in particular, is popular. Join DJ Kerwin for a ballroom dance demonstration and lesson!

The event will feature food by Big Jerk Caribbean Catering and Bakery, steel pan, music by DJ Finbar &amp; DJ Kerwin and a Silent Auction. One of the many items available for silent auction includes “African Princess” by renowned artist Laurie McGaw. 

Royal City Brewing Company will again be providing “Caribbean Sunshine”, a special sorrel beer in honour of the holiday season. Sorrel is a member of the hibiscus family and the leaves are used to makes jams, drinks and wine. Sorrel is a favourite drink in the Caribbean for Christmas and New Year.
