Project Profile:Many factors influence engineering practices associated with water and sewer infrastructure in Canada&#x27;s Arctic. These factors include the extreme cold conditions that infrastructure must withstand, ground related conditions, the short construction season, challenges of transporting construction material, delays in procuring specialized equipment, and an undersupply of labour.Climate change in the far north has reached a milestone where the temperature increase is unstoppable according to the United Nations. This has become, and will continue to be a significant an issue for water and sewage infrastructure in the Canadian Arctic. In general, the changing Arctic climate will influence the quantity and quality of water that is already in a limited supply in all of the communities. As a historic example, in Grise Fiord, Nunavut, the stream that fills the water reservoirs on an annual basis has dried up during the summer filling season, and as a result the community ran out of drinking water over the course of the following winter. The community resorted to harvesting icebergs, and chopping and placing the ice into the reservoir to maintain the water supply.Most northern communities have limited capacity for dealing with water and sewage, whether it be financial, administrative or human resources. Water supply and wastewater treatment in the Arctic will require new approaches and new technologies to maintain robust and resilient systems. Presenter:Ken Johnson, MASc, RPP, FCAE, P.Eng. (NAPEG Life Member)Ken Johnson is a consultant, author, editor, researcher, historian, advisor, peer reviewer, public speaker, mentor, educator, and public intellectual on the Arctic and remote communities. He has authored over 100 technical papers, articles and posters on the planning, engineering, and history associated with development in the Canadian Arctic and remote communities. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineers, and he is a recognized Canadian authority on Arctic and remote Water, Sanitation, and Health (WASH). He has delivered presentations and lectures on Arctic WASH across Canada and in Alaska, Greenland, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Russia, China, and India.
