The Well: Storytelling and healing

Join us for a facilitated session on healing through art and embodied lived experience through storytelling.

<h3>T﻿his event is hosted by <a href="https://theonn.ca/topics/onn-projects/decent-work-for-indigenous-black-and-racialized-workers/#The-Well" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Well</a>, and is exclusively for Black, Indigenous and/or racialized workers in the nonprofit sector in Ontario.</h3><p>This session on storytelling and healing is part of an ongoing, multifaceted collaboration that is growing from discussions on indigeneity, displacement, migration, refugee experiences, spirituality, kinship, community, and healing through art. </p><p>This gathering will focus on key concepts in storytelling from Indigenous thought, critical race theory, and feminism that include: the importance of lived experience, the body as archive, and stillness and reflection in healing.</p><p><strong>Please note that this session will not be recorded. </strong>All registered participants will receive the slide deck, and a curated list of resources within one week of the event. If you have any questions about the event, please contact info@theonn.ca. </p><p></p><h3>Session objectives:</h3><ul><li>Understanding the role of creativity as a mode of healing and strength.</li><li>Developing ways to embed creative arts within your daily practice, and workplace culture.</li><li>Relationality</li><li>Reciprocity</li><li>Responsibility</li></ul><p></p><h3>Topics covered will include:</h3><ul><li>Creative expression and artistry, to understand and initiate healing.</li><li>Embodied lived experience through storytelling.</li><li>Intergenerational strength and knowledge production.</li><li>Trauma, healing, well-being, kinship.</li></ul><p></p><h3>Session facilitators:</h3><ol><li>Maral Aguilera-Moradipour, (she/her), PhD</li><li>Shauna Kechego-Nichols, Anishinaabe Kwe (she/her), B.A., MSW, RSW</li></ol><p></p><h3>F﻿acilitator bios:</h3><p><strong>Maral Aguilera-Moradipour</strong> is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Arts, Culture, and Media at the University of Toronto Scarborough where her areas of interest include critical refugee studies, anticolonial and Indigenous thought, diaspora studies, and critical digital studies. Maral received her PhD in English Literature from Western University (2020), has taught at King’s University College and the University of Toronto Scarborough, and is the 2022 recipient of the F. E. L. Priestley Prize for her article, “Celestial and Terrestrial Constellations: Relationality and Migration in Rebecca Belmore’s Biinjiya’iing Onji (From Inside).” She is a collaborator in the community-driven research project, &quot;Refugee States&quot; with community organizations and scholars across Quebec and Ontario. This project centres oral history, digital storytelling, and community archives. Maral fled Iran as a refugee and has lived in the Great Lakes area since childhood.</p><p></p><p><strong>Shauna Kechego-Nichols</strong>, Anishinaabe Kwe, Bear Clan is a registered Social Worker and is Ojibwe and Oneida from Chippewas of the Thames First Nation. A believer in life-long learning, Shauna has diplomas in Broadcasting Television (2005), Advanced Filmmaking (2007), Social Service Worker (2010), Indigenous Healing Practices (2010), she also has a BA in Sociocultural Anthropology (2018) from Western University, a Master of Social Work (2021) from the University of Toronto and Advanced EMDR Psychotherapy Certification (2023). Since 2016, Shauna has continued to lead conversations around addressing Anti-Black racism and Anti-Indigenous racism in partnership with Indigenous, non-Indigenous and racialized folks. Additionally, she has been engaged in a provincial strategy to have a Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) curriculum embedded within schools and government institutions. In her role as Director of Clinical Care and Intensive Services for Atlohsa Family Healing Services in Southwestern, Ontario, she has been leading a 2 year Participatory Action Research called, &quot;Youth Violence Human Trafficking Prevention Project.&quot; This research emphasizes the building of safe spaces and feelings of safety and uses Photovoice, Digital Storytelling and Sharing Circles as its methodology. Exploring themes of prevention, education and awareness of Human Trafficking for youth. Most recently, she teaches at the University of Guelph in the School of Literatures and Languages, exploring Indigenous language revitalization and oral storytelling as a form of decolonization within public spaces and communities.</p>
