Join NYO Canada faculty for an in-depth look at this year's audition excerpts for the 2024 orchestra.

The audition process is a strenuous and integral part of musicianship and success in the arts sector. This workshop series consists of 16 unique workshops tailored for different instruments. Led by seasoned NYO Canada faculty and adjudicators, programming will be customized based on the needs and temperament of the instrument, repertoire and participants. Specific attention will be given to the NYO Canada 2024 audition excerpts. Workshops will begin on November 2nd, 2023 through to December 2023, to ensure that musicians willing to audition for the 2024 NYO Program and other external programs absorb the knowledge and skills to apply in their practice immediately.The purpose of these workshops is to support musicians looking to participate in music competitions, enrol in post-secondary music programs, earn a spot in the NYO Canada Orchestra or at other music programs even to win a spot in pre-professional &amp; professional orchestras!D﻿on&#x27;t forget to apply now to NYO Canada 2024!*Cet atelier sera offert en anglais avec sous-titres en français*

Featured FacultyJ﻿ohn RudolphJohn Rudolph is firmly established as one of Canada’s leading percussionists. He joined the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 1997 and served as Principal Percussionist for 20 years. He was formerly principal percussionist of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the CBC Radio Orchestra and percussionist with the US Air Force Band in Washington, DC. John has appeared as soloist with the symphony orchestras of Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton and the National Arts Centre. As a chamber musician, John has performed with Canada’s premiere percussion ensemble NEXUS, Amici Chamber Ensemble, Soundstreams, Masterpiece Music, Vancouver New Music and the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival. He frequently performs as a member of the Rudolph Family Players with his wife, flutist Kathleen Rudolph and daughter, violist Theresa Rudolph. By invitation, he has performed with the percussion sections of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Kirov Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and Washington DC’s National Symphony Orchestra.In addition to NYOC, John is on the faculty of the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music and the University of Toronto Faculty of Music. He has been a featured clinician for the Ontario Percussive Arts Society and given masterclasses at Lakehead University, Laurentian University, the University of Ottawa and Interlochen Summer Arts Camp in Michigan. Previously, John was Adjunct Professor of Percussion at the University of British Columbia and a faculty member of the Vancouver Academy of Music. His students have gone on to successful careers in the orchestras of Vancouver, Victoria, Chicago, Seoul, Bergen and the National Ballet of Canada. John received the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal in August, 2012 in recognition of his service to Canada as a member of the faculty of the National Youth Orchestra.A native of Philadelphia, John studied privately with Alan Abel and Charles Owen of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, where he studied with Russell Hartenberger, Tony Ames and Morris Lang.He enjoys reading history and following the Philadelphia sports teams. John is an avid runner and has completed 28 marathons including five Boston Marathons.R﻿yan ScottLeading Canadian percussionist Dr. Ryan Scott has been hailed as “Fierce and delicate…a chameleon-like virtuoso who triumphs over the varied colouristic demands and technical challenges” (Gramophone).As a marimba and multi-percussion soloist he has performed extensively in contemporary music festivals in Europe, Japan, China, Indonesia, South Africa, the UK and The Netherlands. He has also performed as guest soloist with the Esprit Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, The Hyogo Performing Arts Centre Orchestra, The Austin Symphony and numerous other orchestras and chamber ensembles across North America.Ryan is a stalwart figure in the Toronto contemporary music community and has performed in over 300 world premieres. In addition to his work as a regular guest artist with NEXUS, Principal Percussionist of the Esprit Orchestra and Percussionist in the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra since 1996, he is also a sought-after chamber musician and teacher. A core member of Continuum Contemporary Music (founded 1985), he also serves the organization as Artistic Director.His live recording of three Maki Ishii percussion concertos with the Esprit Orchestra (Innova 809) elevated Ryan to international acclaim in 2011. He studied with Russell Hartenberger and Robin Engelman at the University of Toronto and serves on the faculty at the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. Ryan is married to harpist Sanya Eng, and lives in Toronto with their three children.
