Muslim Identity, the Partition of India and the Making of Pakistan

Attend a nuanced talk on the making of Muslim identities in South Asia by political economist, Professor Akbar Zaidi!

In academic literature and in public discourse, there are numerous notions of what Muslim identity may have been in colonial and pre-colonial South Asia. Trying to date the beginnings of Muslim identity and self-awareness, has been particularly problematic, with some historians locating the beginnings of an independent Muslim homeland somewhere in the 8th Century, and others finding the origins of Muslim separatism in South Asia shortly after 1857. Dr. Zaidi's talk will focus on the making of Muslim self-conscious identity and whether this, as some believe, led to the partition of India and the making of Pakistan, or whether notions of being Muslim in South Asia were more nuanced and more complicated.<h3>Speaker Biography:</h3>S Akbar Zaidi is the Executive Director of the Institute of Business Administration in Karachi. For four decades, his work has focused on development, governance, and political economy in South Asia. He is a prolific writer with several books to his credit. His most recent book, Making a Muslim: Reading Publics and Contesting Identities in Nineteenth-Century North India, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2021. Zaidi’s work appears regularly in Dawn and The Hindu. T﻿his talk is co-sponsored by the Muslim Materialities lecture series at the University of Toronto, Mississauga.
