Join our volunteer naturalists on outings within and beyond the Calgary. Everyone is welcome! Field trips are held throughout the year and visit parks, natural areas and wildlands within the city, prairies, foothills, and mountains around Calgary.

Join Nature Calgary for a bird walk on St. Patrick's Island on November 18, 2023 and observe the fascinating variety of birds found in their natural habitat. The fall and winter is an excellent time to start birding, with no leaves on the trees it's easier than ever to see the birds! You may have the opportunity to see Bald Eagles, Bohemian Waxwings, Buffleheads, Woodpeckers, and Canada Geese! We'll also be on the lookout for other signs of wildlife on the island. We'll look for tracks, old nests, and maybe even spot one of the mink that frequent the Island in the winter!Our knowledgeable guide will share fascinating insights about the birds and other wildlife you encounter and and talk about their behaviours, making this a great educational opportunity for nature enthusiasts of all ages. We will have binoculars available for participants who don't have them. Space is limited so don't miss your chance to discover the beauty and diversity of Calgary's birdlife on this exciting nature walk!These walks are presented in partnership between East Village and Nature Calgary, with all registration fees being donated directly to Nature Calgary.All walks will start and end at the HYGGE HUT, located directly north of 656 Confluence Way SE on the RiverWalk pathway.Please note that this is an outdoor event and as the weather gets colder please dress for the conditions. We don't want to freeze though so the walks will be cancelled (we will provide notice in writing and refund your tickets) if the weather meets the following conditions:<ul><li>Forecasted high air temperature of the day at less than -20 C</li><li>Forecasted high wind chill of the day at less than -25 C</li><li>At the discretion of CMLC supervisor based on weather conditions such as extreme snow.</li></ul>The upcoming birding event is accessible to all, regardless of age or ability.<ul><li>The pathways are flat. Some pathways are unpaved but they are well compacted. The paved pathways are cleared for snow but there may be icy patches. Guides will exercise discretion based on the group's abilities on which pathways they will take. Please let the guide know if you feel uncomfortable with any chosen path - want to ensure you feel safe!</li><li>Nature Calgary has taken measures to accommodate those with sight or hearing impairments</li><li>Guides are knowledgeable about bird calls to assist those with sight impairments</li><li>Sight cues will be available for those with hearing impairments</li><li>Dogs are not allowed at the event unless medically necessary. This helps ensure the safety and comfort of the wildlife</li><li>The event is LGBTQ+ friendly, welcoming people of all orientations and identities.</li></ul>
