INTRO TO GEL PLATE PRINTING &amp; ABSTRACT COLLAGEMarch 2/3, 202410am - 4pmPrice $200Instructor: Jennifer Love Printed papers are the foundation of Jennifer’s art practice. This class will provide an opportunity to learn some of her techniques for creating, and utilizing them in multi-layered collage. On the first day we will print on paper using a gel plate, and will touch on the technique of using laser prints of your own photos or drawings for resist/transfer prints. These papers will then be employed on the second day, perhaps with assorted paper ephemera (music scores, dictionary pages etc), to compose simple abstract collages. You will complete the workshop with several one-of-a kind art cards and the beginnings of a larger collage. Jennifer has been an artist and teacher for over 40 years. She studied textile arts at Capilano College in North Vancouver and was a founding member of Foxglove Fibre Arts Studio/Gallery on Bowen Island. She has participated in numerous exhibitions on the Sunshine Coast, Bowen Island and Vancouver, most recently at The Kube in Gibsons, the ACT Gallery in Maple Ridge and Habit Trading Co. in Vancouver. Hand-painted and printed fabrics or papers are fundamental to Jennifer’s art practice. While she uses a myriad of different techniques and tools to create them, in recent years she has become more and more enthralled with the possibilities inherent in monoprinting with a gel plate. She works intuitively, embracing the unanticipated results of a printing session as well as the happenstance juxtaposition of collage elements. Gel plate - suggest 8x10” but other sizes are ok. Gelli Arts and Gel Press brands.DO NOT BUY A SPEEDBALL PLATE - THEY DON’T WORK WELL WITH ACRYLIC PAINTS. Paper:25-30 sheets or more of smooth paper. 9x12” or 8.5x11”.60-90 lb sketchbook/drawing/marker paper or card stock. You will use a lot of paper.White tissue paper - suggest 4-5 sheets or more. I buy Spectra Art Tissue. For Laser copy resist/transfers of your own photos or drawings - a fewImages with high contrast and with some very light or white areas. Increase contrast via your computer. Should be printed on laser printer on highest contrast and saturation settings and COLOUR setting, even if it’s in black and white. It’s really important that you follow these guidelines.See my example. I email my images to the Gibsons copy shop for best results.Do not bring inkjet copies unless you just want to use them as collage fodder. Paints - small tubes okIf you already have decent quality soft body acrylic paints, bring whatever you have.Cheap craft paints will probably disappoint. Heavy body paints not so easy to work with.Brands: Golden, Opus, Liquitex or Amsterdam in your fav colours. Include white and blackSmall container matte medium. Fluid paints and Golden OPEN are great but expensive. Equipment4” ‘soft’ brayer. Different size is ok. Mine are Speedball - I think they are the best.Plastic sheet to cover table; masking tape to tape it in placeScissors for cutting paper, cardboard and thin foam.• Any stamps or stencils that you have, for creating texture and pattern.• Paper towels, sponges and/or baby wipes for cleanup. I use a sponge mostly. For Collage:Several blank cards - I use Strathmore Creative Cards with deckle edge. 5x7”One or two blank or lined journals with wrap-around spine, like these:<a href="https://opusartsupplies.com/products/opus-essential-paperback-sketchbooks" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://opusartsupplies.com/products/opus-essential-paperback-sketchbooks</a>A couple of sheets of heavier paper - eg 90lb mixed media or watercolour paper - 8.5x11” or larger.A glue stick. I use UHU. Also Double-sided sticky tape.Scissors, craft knife, rotary cutter, circle cutters if you have them.Self-healing cutting mat, straight edge ruler for trimming and measuringFine black marker pen, sharp pencils I WILL BRING lots of extras including blank cards/ journals - small charge if you use any of these.
