5G can enable smart cities—but at what cost?

SFU's Big Data Hub

Canada is racing to roll out 5G technologies nation-wide. We must debate how these technologies will affect security, privacy and the relationship between government and technology companies. Delaying the rollout of 5G risks putting Canada at a technological and innovation deficit, but overzealous implementation can lead to unforeseen consequences. 5G will propel smart-city technologies that improve urban and rural life—but the roadmap is still unclear.
This fall, Simon Fraser University explores the opportunities and risks of smart cities and the impact on Canadians.

Stéphane Gagnon, Vice-President of the Communications Research Centre's Applications and Performance Wireless branch University. Rodney Vaughan, Sierra Wireless Professor in Communications at Engineering Science, Simon Fraser University.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS: 
Suhayya Abu-Hakima is Co-Founder and CEO of her second AI start-up, Amika Mobile, focused on public safety and security having exited her first AI start-up to Entrust. She is a rare woman technology CEO who has a reputation for excellence and innovation. Sue has both a Masters and PhD in AI and is also a key inventor and innovator of 30 international patents related to AI. She has published more than 125 papers and as a result of her successes, she has received numerous awards, and has been vested with the Order of Ontario. She is a trailblazer and advocate when it comes to women’s participation in the high-tech industry.
Stéphane Gagnon is Vice-President of the Communications Research Centre's Applications and Performance Wireless branch. He joined the organization in 2015, bringing to it over 20 years of experience in the telecommunications and semiconductor fields. Prior to joining the CRC, Mr. Gagnon was Chief Operating Officer for POET Technologies. Earlier, he worked at Integrated Device Technology, formerly Tundra Semiconductor, Motorola, and Nortel (Bell Northern Research), where he progressed through several system design and management positions. Gagnon holds a BSc in Computer Engineering from Laval University.
Rodney Vaughan is the Sierra Wireless professor in Communications at Engineering Science, SFU. His prior career in industrial research and development put a spotlight on the immense value of quality research, which ultimately drew him to academia. His research revolves round information channels and the interplay between communications techniques, signal processing, and the physical aspects - the sensors, and the propagation and scattering of fields and waves. Current projects include theory, design and evaluation methods for adaptive antenna systems and adaptive acoustic systems.
 
ABOUT THE MODERATOR:
Fred Popowich is the scientific director of SFU’s Big Data Initiative, which is a university-wide initiative that empowers people to unlock data for research, education and community impact. His work connects industry and communities with SFU partners and experts to address challenges and opportunities around data. He was the 2017 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the <A HREF="https://www.caiac.ca/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Canadian Artificial Intelligence Association (CAIAC)</A>, recognizing his outstanding service to the artificial intelligence (AI) community in Canada. He regularly talks about the role of AI in society, most recently in a Business in Vancouver Op-Ed entitled, “<A HREF="https://biv.com/article/2018/10/importance-human-factor-relation-smart-city-data" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The importance of the ‘human factor’ in relation to smart-city data</A>”.
